Hello Guys,

Please help in selecting accessories needed for working with glow engines (airplane)

1. will the below glow igniter work with any glow engine/glow plug ?

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11456__Turnigy_Glow_Plug_Lighter_Tool.html

2. Any good diy sources for chicken stick, fuel tank, filters, fuel hand crank or motorized etc.

i'm new to these stuff and appreciate any help. Oh can i finish buying all these for under 2000/- ?

Today might be a great and wonderful day. It depends on you.

Do not buy that glow plug ignitor, i have one and it's pathetic. Rcskyhobby has every thing you need (fuel tank , fuel lines , chicken stick , after run oil , fuel filters )  . Its a great lhs have bought a good no of items from them . For the glow plug ignitor I'll recommend the prolux one from lotus hobby , it will accept a dc voltage from 5-20 v (plug a 3s lipo and you are good to go ) hope this helps .

Yes it is good , i have 3 glow plug ignitors
1- turnigy glow plug tool - its useless
2- hobbico hot shot 2 - its good but you need to charge it frequently
3- prolux (lotus hobby) - by far the best , i have added deans plug to it and power it from a old 3s lipo .

okay and what do think about power panel box ?
Today might be a great and wonderful day. It depends on you.

Rcjabalpur

They are good as well , power them by a 12v dc power source and you are good to go . Some power panels even have a built in fuel pump . Buy a clip on style glow plug ignitor (1.2-1.5 dc v) .

fuel tubing sizes ? fuel filters size types ?
Today might be a great and wonderful day. It depends on you.

Rcjabalpur

Fuel tubing depends upon your engine , the fuel filter on Rcskyhobby is good upto 90 class engines (if iam not mistaken) .

Glow model receiver battery options and which is the best or safe unit.

2S lipo with ubec
2S life suibalte for the receiver
4 or 6 cell nimh or nicad battery pack (diy)

also what about these 5v battery banks ? has anyone used them
Today might be a great and wonderful day. It depends on you.

sanjayrai55

I use a 2S LiFe. I also use a LSD NiMh pack

The Life is 1300 mah, the NiMh is 2400 mah

sanjayrai55

A lot depends on the model size, and which servos you use

On large gassers (30 cc to 150 cc - that's what I have seen) it is common to use a high capacity Lipo with a BEC

sahilkit

its a 25 size glow model ( SPAD - Buhor 25 ) with 8gram e-max digital servo for throttle, ailerons on futaba 3004, rubber/elevator on 17gram or 25 gram metal gear servos. i was thinking of using 2S lipo 1000mah with 3amp ubec.

Okay guys here is what i have come up with so far and i find the list to be sufficient but please correct where necessary  :)

3. Fuel tank (in-line filter).
4. propeller with plastic cone/spinner.
5. servos, min 4 no's.

7. Rx battery.
8. ARF trainer plane or kit or spad diy.
9. Tri - landing gear with steering and 2.5inch or bigger rubber wheels.

10. chicken stick.

Extra nice to have stuff
1. starter motor.
2. Tachometer.
3. temperature meter.
4. wind meter.
5. multi-meter.
6. extra model spares like wheels etc.

3 A will be adequate for these servos

sahilkit

Thanks for clarification sanjay also did you have any bad experiences with hitec HS-311 servos. Oh add a prop balancer - a must to balance the propeller on a glow model other wise vibrations can lead to servo failures etc.

glow airplane requirements
« Sent to: sahilkit on: Today at 08:36:07 PM »

I notice that through many queries in your thread, you have compiled a list of items required.
However there are many other small things...
1. 1/4" sq balsa or CF rod for pushrods
2. Horns and clevises
3. Wire for pushrod ends
4. Adjustable pushrod stoppers that fit on the servo arms
5. Landing gear, or wire for making (nose gear not easy)
6. Steering arm for nose gear
7. Hinges
8. Nylon wing mounting bolt/base set
9. Spare props
10. Rx battery voltage display
11. Adjustable glass reinforced engine mount
12. Bolts and blind nuts for fixing engine mount to firewall
13. Bolts and nyloc nuts for engine mounting
14. Source of fuel, especially if nitro required. (My engine's performance dramatically improved by adding just 1.5% nitro)

See, many of the bits and pieces are available in packs of ten. That is ok if you build many models. Otherwise expensive for just one model.

There may be even more requirements like kit, balsa, ply, depron, monokote etc.

If you tell me what you are planning, especially what engine you have, i can do the following:
1. Ask a friend who has all this stuff to make up a set for a single model, and quote price
2. Offer you an old Rx ready .40 SoloStar with/without engine

You really should try and find other glow flyers, so that you don't have to start completely from scratch!
Regards
(Will try to put this PM on your thread as it may interest others too)

Hitec HS 311 are probably the best standard servos around

sahilkit

Hi Sanjay.

The reason i asked you about HS-311 servo is because of horror stories i keep reading on servo failure (resent production) at RCG or RCU etc sites.

Coming to standard servos options are becoming less and expensive  :-\.

Quote14. Source of fuel, especially if nitro required. (My engine's performance dramatically improved by adding just 1.5% nitro)

I'm now able to source the fuel components with nitro and mixed my first 100ml fuel tested on cox 049 (zero nitro), the engine starts fine.

I want to build a buhor 25 trainer with ums 25 engine but if its the wrong size model to build i can always change direction.

If you are building a coro with glow, you can benefit from consulting sanjayrai55.

BTW, 'sanjay', as you like to call him, is some 30-40 years younger than me. (I'm close to 100!)

Hope you got the point.
He's quite a senior chap (in many ways), guys, in case you didn't know.
I address him as Rai saheb, if you have noticed...
