making nitro fuel is  simple....

25% castor oil + 75% methanol
or
20% castor oil + 80% methanol

u can always add 5-15% nitro methane....
i.e. 20% castor oil + 15% nitromethane + 65% methanol

castor oil available at medical shops.. and rest at chemical shop..

i mix my own fuel....
methanol =  50/lt
castor oil =  200/400ml

so  5 lt fuel  comes  for    700

 

But without Nitro you cant use it in RC trucks or buggy's

Which Question ??

So where does one get Castor oil.
The local chemist sells castor from Dabur (Erand tail), which looks more like an edible item...Can this one be safely used?

Also, another post specified using Agarwal Medical Grade Castor Oil...I could not find this anywhere.

you are correct, my findings say, there are commonly two grades of castor oil available, the first is the refined/filtered and purified version which is used for consumption under medication. this is almost double in cost.

The other version may not be suitable for consumption and is mostly un-branded generally used for external applications etc. this is almost half the cost of filtered one and is mostly availble in large volumes as compared to prior one (2 to 5 litre), some smaller shopkeepers sell this loose and one can purchase this from them. i got this @ Rs. 250/litre.

The later one is fit for our kind of applications.

So you are basically looking at correct product but maybe you may look for less expensive variant.

Since I'm planning to brew nitro fuel for the first time, my concern was that this branded version should not contain any alternative additives, which might harm the engine (don't want to run the engine on added vitamins or minerals ). Also heard that there is Castrol M which is rarely available.

I'll try to look for the other variant you talk about. ATM I also do not plan to add any nitro to the mixture. simple 80-20 ratio.

yes, even i use simple 80-20 mixure of Methanol and castor, to run up my engine, Castor oil is natural product(extracted from some seeds) and i heard that some ayurvedic prescriptions need this, but, im sure these are much refined versions.

The second option can be bought from purani dilli (khari bowli) area where there are many shops, but they may sell 5 litres as minimum qualtity (which was too much to consume for my case), i got this from a local ayurvedic shop, who sold me loose as i made this clear to him that i do not need this for medicinal use.

just get the commercially available Methanol.  This is available at Chemical suppliers in every city who supply to schools, Colleges and hospitals.  You may take their number from yellow pages and ask them for the Methanol... Today they may be reluctant to sell you due to some states putting restrictions on sale of methanol.... but as commercial cleaning agent he may be able to sell you slamm quantities.... enough for your hobby needs...  The same shops also store commercially used castor oil.. yes it is used as a laxative in medicine.

It is hard to get Methanol these days and specially a good quality pure methanol is extremely hard because it is one of the restricted chemicals by Indian Govt. and shops need a proper license and also need to provide proof os sales for this chemical.

Now about the RC fuel, why spend money and time and break your head when you can get good quality branded RC fuel easily for a decent cost.

There is water in the fuel.
Either in the Methanol or absorbed moisture from the air when humidity is high.
