Old Cox 049s.
Six hours in methanol hasn't helped much.
Tomorrow will try 12 hours in thinner.

Does anyone know whether brake fluid is better or antifreeze, for cleaning old engines?

Hello sir from what i have read any tried i can say antifreeze in crokpot works like a dream for old engines . I had a 10 year old .46 engine which was in a bad condition , i left it overnight in low temp by morning it was all good

The reason i didn't use a crocpot was because i didn't know what it was!

Even real dogs need a bath sometime...
Specially posted for VC Sir and kindred souls...

Ques: why posted in an RC Forum?
Ans: site of 60 meter glide achieved on test hand launch. Guess RCTLG went as far as possible when chased by Golu.

Sir its more like a slow electronic cocker you can find a 5l one for 2500 buck's and many more

On the other hand i have heard and seen people having huge sucess with ultrasonic cleaners as well

Here is an example http://m.snapdeal.com/product/westing-house-mini-rice-cooker/185928/viewEnlarge?imageIndex=1

For the ultra sonic cleaner you can serch HK

I just use an old "dekchi" with water and a lid . keep it on low heat for
one hour and use an old toothbrush. for stubborn stains dip the toothbrush in duco thinner.

the antifreeze / crockpot method no doubt works well ... but never needed to go that far.
by the way - antifreeze you will not get here .... so ask for coolant .... same base - glycol

Why not try a parts de-greaser? (Eg. Anabond Bio-Green) should work the best.

I tried to degum my engines which had been lying unused for ove 7 years.

First attempt was by soaking them in kerosene. I had to procure kerosene from the black market as I am not a ration card holder. Result - the engines refused to budge.

Second attempt was a bath in thinner. Again no result.

Third attemt was soaking them in methanol. No effect. By this time I was desparate that I tried to force the parts to move. Result - I only managed to turn the high speed needle inside the carburator of my AX46.  :banghead:

Finally, read that castor dissolves in glycol. So I purchased a bottle of Castrol Radicool Heavyduty - coolant concentrate/antifreeze. Poured the coolant into an empty Bounvita bottle and soaked the engine. And when I could sneek into the kitchen, took a pot (bhagona), heated some water and placed the bournvita bottle with the engine inside it. Keep adjusting the flame so that the water remains warm but does not boil. Within 30 min the engine was free.

By the way - can any forum member guide me on tuning the high speed needle (which is inside the carb) of my OS AX46  ???

Where sir, never came across.

Didn't do any cleaning today. Changed the stripped aileron servo on my scratch build foamy Spitfire.
And you know what i found?
Unlimited vertical with rolls all the way at 340gms AUW with an L2210 1650kv 8x4 3s1000mah!

Really warmed the old cockles.

BTW was also expecting some hints on how to clean RCDOG!

If that is meant for me, I suggest you look again. It's very much there. Can't quote the relevant passage; it's a pdf

Thanks Iyer. I am now back in Bangalore.

One Cox 049 salvaged.
Ten minutes in WD40 did more than 3 days in methanol!

A year to two back, Saikat sir fobbed off his or his father's old stuff on me for about 20,000 or 25,000.

Now after a shot of WD40 dog bath, they are like collectors items!
