Title: TAIL DRIVE -BELT AND TORQUE TUBE !!!
Post by: Shannon on April 15, 2013, 09:45:49 PM
Hey guys another post to make things easy to select if u require a belt or torque tube for ur helis ......which has more advantage and drawbacks .....as everything in life has its pros and cons ....firstly getting a torque tube for beginner heli flyers is a big no just keep that in mind ....

Important note belt drive system varies not all are bad most of them like ones used in SAB GOBLINS , COMPASS WARP,SYNERGY,MSH Protos  helis are really good difference mentioned below

Ok so belt drives are of two types
1.Belt over pulley
2. Belt over gear

BELT OVER PULLEY  pulley
The align 450 sport v3 ,align v2 are classic examples of belt over pulley ...one thing  to remember is that a belt always flex no matter how tight, the power delivery to the tail is not efficient ....this is due to the small  pulley and insufficient teeth on them to provide enough grip at .high speeds specially when giving sudden power inputs the belt kinda slips no matter how good is the gyro u will get a tail jerk small or large depends on gyro use and servo but jerk will be there ..

BELT OVER GEAR
The MSH protos ,SAB GOBLIN use a belt drive but unlike the belt over pulley ,the belt on these birds are rapped around a big gear ..the msh protos has the belt rapped around the main gear itself which provides efficient power to the tail at all times due to the increased surface of the gear the belt does not slip if sudden power is applied the tail hold firm at all times .....

SO NOT ALL BELT DRIVES ARE BAD !!!

ADVANTAGES OF BELT
Belt drives are more forgiving if u strike the tail on the ground the belt and the tail shaft take the damage mostly only tail shafts need to be replaced ...it is very good for beginners and sport fliers ,if u dont own a goblin or msh or any of those birds dont use the belt over pulley for 3d at all  its a bad idea ...
DISADVANTAGE Mentioned above but there is one more ......belts ware out faster u can get around 60 flights n then need to change them depends on usage they get blunt and slip even more ....

TORQUE TUBE
One of the most efficient power delivery systems for tail ...the tail is directly powered by gears and torque tube so there is no slipage and power loss dont  matter how u fly ...this is the best way to go if ur really good at flying , sport and 3d flying

DISADVANTAGE
LESS forgiving in a crash mostly the tail shaft and umbrella gears will get damaged ...replacement required in a bad crash gears are costly ...hence not ment for beginners at all ....

CONCLUSION
The best tail drive systems belong to goblin and msh helis ...efficient in power and less to repair .....if u dont own one of them the torque tube is the best way to go for intermediate and above .....

TORQUE TUBE - POWER DELIVERY WHEN U REALLY NEED IT

well written shannon, would go for TORQUE TUBE as it is better for high speed , torque and power . Slips are absent too. Well dont know whether lubrication is required for gear as they run at high rpms.

Depends on preferences actually... I just put a tiny bit of grease... It reduces gear chatter also, but if u fly  in a place where there is mud around don't apply anything

Good info Shannon

Few points

Quoteot all are bad most of them like ones used in SAB GOBLINS , COMPASS WARP,SYNERGY,MSH Protos  helis are really good difference
I think Synergy uses Torque Tube.

Quotebelts ware out faster u can get around 60 flights n then need to change them depends on usage they get blunt and slip even more ....
I don't think this is true since I completed 200 flights on my belt driven Trex 450 Pro - there was no wear on the belt.
It also depends on how implement it - if the mesh is not correct then the teeth will wear out quickly.

Also, don't get the impression that belt driven Trex is restricted to only basic flying. One can easily do flips, rolls, loops, tic tocs etc.

Note: Above info based on my experience on a belt driven Trex 450. Haven't tried TT yet

Synergy rolled out with belt Sujit because of customer demand matt bottos went  back tt..
Yes it's also the quality of the belt but a totally different subject it is...
I started feeling the slip within 60flights at 100 it was almost gonna be flat as i ran the belt tight.... Yes I did mention it is good for sport flights... But the belt over gear is much better for everything... Sujit I'll introduce to my tt when i meet you will notice a great difference  ;D

Yeah, thanks - I am sure TT will be better on Trex Pro.
I have a 4 month / 200 flight only belt - will post a pic tonight

finally got a pic of it the synergy E7 belt drive ...belt over the gear more area more grip =awesomeness SAB GOBLIN  BELT DRIVE
