Capacitor powered Indoor Free flight model

Hi

Anyone explored the world of capacitor powered Indoor FF models.
Pretty interesting and capacitor, micromotor and reduction gearing can be purchased online pretty cheap.

You can get flights between 1 to 2 mins which is quite a satisfying duration.

It is planned to be introduced in the Science Indoor Aeromodelling Olympiad for school students of USA
Made my first model called CAP Basic.

Used a 10F super capacitor that gives a motor run of over a min. Weighs only 2.5 gms.
The micromotor along with the propeller and reduction gearing was ordered from EBay -- around $3.0 with free shipping

Wing covering polyester lamination film about 8 microns. Can also use the thinnest plastic grocery bag.

Rest is balsa frame.
Plan says direct drive of propeller but I feel the reduction gear will control its flight especially during the initial burst when capacitor charge is full and rpm is maximum.

I am interested in making plane with this idea. I have talked with engineer of one poly film and I have got 12 micron (A2 or A3 size or bigger) plastic sheet from engineer. Engineer is a very good person. He didn't take money from me.

If you can help me in making these types of plane then i am ready to build. I was interested in making plane but plane took 2-3 days. After  2-3 days, my plane didn't fly then now i am not interested. I am interested if anyone working on same thing & communication is easy with that person.

Please tell me details like design, link to purchase item.

I already have 716 coreless motor but don't have this gear setup.
I think 4 is not much difference.
I need only gear system.

What about plane design and weight of the plane?

The reduction gearing comes as dis-assembled components.
If your motor fits in the socket of the gearing assembly then perhaps you can use this assembly,
But at the same time it should not turn out to be overpowered for the model weight.

Actually can make an extra fuselage motor stick for rubber and use the same wings and stab. will be interesting to compare the performance

A very short test flight of the rubber powered capacitor model.

Hi all
Finally got down to doing some test flights of this capacitor powered model.
The first flight saw the model climb steeply and got stuck in the rafters.
Luckily it disentangled itself and came down.
The wing and stab incidence was too much giving steep climb. Reduced both for subsequent flights
I was charging the capacitor by time. Charged for about 15 secs.
The more accurate way is to charge using a voltage regulator which will then give replicable flight characteristics.
Subsequent flight gave capacitor only half charge of less than 10 secs.
This gave flights of approx 30 secs.
Can increase duration with more trimming to prevent steep climb. And can then give optimum charge.
Will do all this shortly in a bigger indoor space.

The hall is just one badminton court wide. There is a card tab on the port fin of stab that can be adjusted toto control turning radius. Too tight a turn is also not elegant to watch. Also you will notice the effect of this control surface reduces as thrust decreases and turning circle in the last lap becomes wider.
This capacitor power is a good crossover from HLG CLG and rubber to electric power.

Don't need tape to stick tissue or film to wing / stab spars. It will add weight.
Just fevistick glue stick gives good adhesion. Best option of course for the weight conscious is spray glue like 3M77.
Glue stick seems to stick thin grocery bag plastic to balsa well. Have used it and the adhesion has not given way yet.

I had posted earlier that I had made a motor stick for rubber for the same wing and stab.
Did just one flight that day with rubber. The turning circle of this configuration was much larger and it hit the wall after half a circle. Have now given the tail boom an offset to tighten the turn. Will test fly and post videos / pics .

3m spray is very expensive.
Any alternate of this spray which u used & tried?

I think Camlin or some other Indian stationery company may have now come out with a spray glue. Check out in a large stationery shop.

Nice BUILD..

I will recomend fevicol SR (craft glue, available to paper shops) with water sprayed using an empty colin spray bottle.
Just give a try... you may use brush. high the water, less the glus, less the weight.
However time required to dry, and it may open like peel off... if pulled..
We have to unite and to prove ourself to make indigenous products as well as marketing / Canvasing them. I'm sure we must achieve success if we try unitedly.

This video of my Capacitor Powered model in flight at the Nagpur event is a classic example of why Free Flight requires extreme attention to detail. When in doubt cross check a hundred times before launch.
You can't control the model once launched.
The capacitor model was flying beautifully till the tape holding the trailing edge tissue tube of the wing at the correct angle of incidence came off and the trailing  edge came off the wing post and it then crashed.
When setting the angle of incidence I did notice the tape piece holding the tissue tube on the wing Post was not so sticky. Thought it was sticky enough considering the speed of flight is slow. I was wrong.
Learnt a very good lesson not to leave things to chance.
