For those of us who fly Spider/ Deadcat type frames with dji arms, may find it difficult to mount a gimbal, without fitting extended landing gear.
I fly the Tbs Discovery, and was looking for a gimbal that would fit. After searching around I found a few, that were tailor made for the Disco but
the price with shipping was too much. I gathered that I would have to mod a gimbal for my needs so I purchased the following from RCMumbai:
http://rcmumbai.com/index.php/product/2-axis-brushless-gimbal-with-controller-for-gopro/

Its a cheap gimbal and the performance is nothing to write home about, but it would do. After consulting Google for mount designs I found that the gimbal I had purchased did not have any mounting screws for the gimbal motors. >:(
So I came up with the following idea.

I chose wood because it was easily available and easy to work.

I bought a Tbs discovery, traced the design onto a g10 sheet and squared the motor layout and cut my own and sold the Tbs.
Good job on the mount- now u have a disco pro. I did similar but used a g10 sheet to mount roll motor and zip tied it to the front posts with rubber in between.

Ps- I use two cameras. One Fpv and one recording, becuz fpv camera light handling and reaction is very quick which I need and it works on system battery.

Thanks Pravesh. I asked about the camera coz I noticed in your video, that sometimes the quad would be facing the ground. I figured you had an additional cam with maybe an upward angle. The way you fly, the lag from HD camera video out would be fatal.

Have been testing my gimbal on my Discovery Pro :giggle:
I have also been messing about with some video editing software. I was trying my hand at some editing with Sony Vegas 10 and decided to post some Video for you all to critique. I found out very quickly that I need a more powerful computer.
Also note no cows were hurt during the filming. ;D

Nice. Whats the weight of that gimbal now without camera? I dont know why but plastic gimbals on RcMumbai weigh more than alu ones for some reason.

ashimda

Gimbal weighs 150g and made of cnc aluminium.

Hi all! I have been looking to make/get something exactly like this! I have a RCTimer spider style frame which I want to use for aerial photogrammetry to build 3D models of buildings and terrain. I have tried to use my mobile but it is simply not good enough.

I wanted to make a 3D printed front gimbal just like in the TBS discovery pro since I have access to a printer and my budget is a bit tight. I also wanted to re-use some old burnt motors for the gimbal by rewinding them.

Can you kindly help me out with my project? If it's too tough, then I am up to buying a ready made gimbal as well, but only as a last resort. How much did it cost you to set up your gimbal sir? And do you think the performance is good enough to get clear images good enough for reconstruction in 3D?

ashimda

The gimbal cost me 7000/- from RCMumbai and the mounting cost zero. Picture quality depends on the camera used and the Vibrations reaching the camera. The Gimbal I am using is satisfactory for my casual use. It has a little horizon drift when Yawing but that can be adjusted.
There are many gimbal mount designs available for 3D printing so you should be able to make a better mounting than I have.

Thank you for the info sir. I am planning to buy the turnigy HD or the SJ2000? Both are go pro copies. Would they be sufficient?
I am not sure of the kind of design I need to be looking out for, do you think you could point ne out to a few designs I can get printed? Thank you.

Most of the gimbals available, are specifically made for the Go-Pro camera. The gimbals are designed so that it balances with the Go-Pro mounted.
When using clone cameras, you will have to modify and balance the gimbal.
Gimbal mounts are made according to the gimbal to be fitted. Some gimbals have screws holes for the Roll motor, and some dont.

I based my design on this mount. Since my gimbal motors didnt have screw holes I had to adapt.

That is very helpful. Thank you very much sir

An update...
If anyone is planning to buy the Goodluckbuy gimbal, DON'T. After a few flights the horizon drift becomes irritating and just spoils the shot. I had set pitch and roll control on my TX, but constantly correcting the horizon means less attention to flying. Thankfully I managed to burn the controller ;D so I decided to try another cheap gimbal.
After a bit of reading I decided to get the Walkera G-2D gimbal. The G-2D is lighter than the previous one, and cheaper too.
I mounted the gimbal the same way as before and went flying. The G-2D performed very well, much better than my previous one. Little to no drift at all
It does drift when you pull some G's but it corrects itself. At the price and the performance, I'm very pleased.
I had a vacation trip planned for Goa and decided to take my Disco with me. I didn't have a case for transportation so had to improvise.
I managed to get permission to fly from the Hotel authorities and managed to get a few good shots.

@ashimda,
After seeing your lovely Goa video, looks like i have three choices:
1. Go to Goa
2. Get a setup like yours
3. Learn to play guitar like in the video.

Third option seems easiest...
