Title: MY First Ever Quad- THE DJI PHANTOM...
Post by: viky_s on May 07, 2013, 09:09:29 PM
Fellow members,
I had posted a few days ago which beginner QUAD to go for and got great response from you guys.
I was not very keen on assembling the quad myself due to time constrains. I am basically into high end cctv surveillance cams business so wanted a good FPV/Aerial Photography capable quad in future.
So after taking inputs from you guys and talking to Mr.Nilesh from Spherehobbies i finally decided to got for the DJI Phantom... (A very Good decision on my part). Completed the wire transfer and got the Quad on the 3rd day itself. Spherehobbies are very professional guys with great service and support.I had downloaded all the necessary videos and manuals from DJI site. Followed every letter to the T.
Phantom is great quad. Great build quality. 4 standby props are also provided. Lipo battery along with charger. 1s/2s/3s Lipo with 1/2/3amp charging. Assembly required 10-15 minutes max. Charged the battery. Took the quad for the Maiden flight. Armed the quad pushed the throttle up and ...... oooops no power to the rotors. checked all the connections/configurations etc but no use. Then i remembered the Phantom as a Combination Start sequence for safety.
Got the CS done and flew the quad straight up around 10 ft. Left all controls. it just hovered there. Took it for a spin and it handled beautifully.
I was flying in GPS Atti mode so i could at any time just leave all the controls and the quad would immediately stabilize and hover at the same altitude by itself.
Even did the courageous think of turning of the transmitter in mid air and watched as the Phantom just  came back to me and landed itself. Pure bliss.....
Now looking for some good FPV kit any suggestions????

Will post videos and pics very soon....

happy flying.....

FPV kit? The phantom only supports the gopro hero 1 and 2 out of the box. The hero 3 is too small for the camera frame it comes with but can be used by stuffing it in with a bit of foam. Its very difficult to mount FPV gear on it as its a closed case. But there are some upcoming options from DJI itself like the DJI zenmuse or the vision camera system for the phantom.

Hi guys,
Had a huge crash with the phantom. While flying at about 25ft I hit a telephone wire badly and the quad just dropped to the ground . :banghead: I thought this is it but to my surprise no major damage was done. Only 1 of the props had a awkward angle. Changed the prop and voila4  {:)} the phantom was up and flying.
Really impressed about the build quality. Then I decided to go for fpv route.
I retrofitted my phantom for FPV system
Installed the dji 5.8ghz tx on the phantom. Got the gopro hero3 mounted with its waterproof case.
Will post videos and pics shortly. Had a problem with the lcd monitor cable so awaiting the new cable.
Also thinking about OSD and telemetry.

Happy flying...

The waterproof housing provides grt protection to hero3 against accidents.
Its totally worth the extra payload
