The rains are here in Bangalore and often play spoilsport when I want to fly my Reptile 500. So I thought of building an indoor flyer. Inspired by Oscar Liang's blog post here, I decided to build myself a micro quad I could fly with my current radio setup. This quadcopter comes with a 32 bit processor that can run CleanFlight. Hopefully, this project will give me some experience with the CleanFlight software.

Parts list:
Integrated frame/flight controller
USB to Serial adapter
Hubsan 7mm brushed motors
Hubsan spare props
FrSky VD5M Receiver
Turnigy nano-tech 350mah 1S 65~130C Lipo Pack

The frame/flight controller came in today and it is smaller than I ever expected. Photos coming up!

Thank you Darshan and Sundaram Sir. Miginstruments, I got the parts mostly from BangGood and the frame from GLB. Parichya will be providing the Rx and LiPo.
Here are the pics of the frame. I am still waiting for the rest of the parts. This seems small but is actually much bigger than the likes of the CX-10 and Eachine H7.

That is literally MICRO.. keep.us updated as you receive the parts.. :hatsoff: :salute:
A question. . Are you using gears on the motors as.in syma and other quad!

SK1701

The good thing about this quad being so small is that I can can practise flying in different orientations as well as flying acro. I do not think gears are necessary for these motors.

SK1701

I have received the USB to Serial adapter as well as the motor and props. So I got around to the software setup.
The first thing I needed to do was install the drivers for my CP2102 USB to Serial adapter. I got the drivers here and they worked flawlessly.

I then flashed CleanFlight after disconnecting the bootloader jumper on my board. the connections are Tx-Rx, Rx-Tx, Gnd-Gnd and 5V-5V. I got around to the software setup as well. I copied the PID values from the original blog post. I will tune them once I fly (still need an Rx and LiPo). I also set up the profiles 1,2 and 3 in CleanFlight such that I can get Acro Mode, Horizon Mode and Headfree mode respectively. This is with only 4 channel input! I can post my CLI dump if anyone is interested. Here are some pictures.

Sorry I haven't updated this thread in ages. Thanks to a production error in one batch of boards, my board came with the wrong motor driver transistors. i have ordered some IRLML2502 FETs to replace them with, but I've been waiting for them for almost one and a half months. :(

SK1701

After I got the FETs, I tried repairing the board. However, I appear to have damaged the board while desoldering the old transistors. I got a replacement board from GLB with a record shipping time of one week by Hong Kong post! The build was quick and easy and this quad is a little rocket! A great acro trainer though the flight time leaves a lot to be desired (2.5 min). Pics and video coming up!

Is the FrSky receiver compatible with HobbyKing 6CH Transmitter?

SK1701

No. Receivers are usually only compatible with their own brand/ protocol of transmitter. FrSky receivers will only work with FrSky transmitters or modules.

radekologia

I have a HobbyKing 6ch transmitter. I don't think HK makes any micro receivers like the one mention by Oscar Liang (FrSky VD5M). Kindly help with the same.

satyagupta

I have few of these lying in warehouse. Its very very old, like 2 yrs back i bought it. But never found a mini receiver to try my hands on it.

Anyhow its a good build

SK1701

Thank you sir. I never got around to posting flying videos and completed pictures and now I've dismantled it completely. I will do a rebuild and post some videos.

Also, are the boards you have the STM32 version that support cleanflight or the ATMega version that run MultiWii? I have seen both of them available.

satyagupta

I think they are ATMega version cos 2 years back ATmega was common, now STM is common.

Hello SK1701,

I already have all the parts to build this mini quad, including the usb adapter (same as you).
My problem is that I have an error connection when I try to flash it with cleanflight. I tryed with baseflight and the messagge is equal: "No configuration received within 10 seconds, communication failed"

I have the drivers from silabs, my pc detects the usb and says that is installed well.

Until I read your post I had wired it wrong, tx-tx rx-rx. So I supposed that it was the problem  {:)}, but it wasn't.  :banghead:
Boot0 is disconnected and the other connector is in "pow" position.

I will apreciate any idea or advice.

Thanks
Carlos

SK1701

Hello Carlos.

Have you selected "Full Chip Erase" and "No reboot sequence" in the firmware flasher screen? Also, have you made sure that the CP2102 adapter and the CJMCU have a common ground connection. When you connect the adapter to your computer do the LEDs on the CJMCU board turn on?

carpalen29

Yes, I did everything you describe. I will send a picture when I arrive at home, maybe you see something wrong... Thanks!

carpalen29

Sorry...but...how do you upload photos??! it says maximum attachment size allowed 200 kb!

SK1701

You either need to reduce the image size a lot or upload them to an external hosting site like Photobucket and embed the link here.
