Title: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: Dharmik on September 26, 2012, 12:31:31 PM
After reading hundreds of DIY topics, understanding physics of multirotor and watching FPV videos finally i have designed completely new FPV frame on CAD. At this moment i am working on prototype frame. This is just 50-60% work of my project. Some of the 3-4 exciting features and dimensions are not included in this pic. The frame has plenty of space to put camera, fpv gear and other electronics. One more exciting feature will be custom landing skid which will give it stunning look and smooth landing.

Features to be achieved:
- Spacially designed for FPV, onboard recording, nonFPV quadcopters
- Prop free video
- Front and back camera
- Specially designed landing skid.
- Target weight will be 300-400grams
- Compatible with 8-9 inch props.
- Fully symmetrical on both axis
- Some more features to be shown later.

At this moment it's just on paper design, i will complete prototype soon. I will post final frame dimensions, boom length and nut-bolts placement later.

Nice initiative! A completely indigenous quadcopter frame at last!
Will it be CNCed? Do share more details as and when available.

- Fully symmetrical on both axis
I prefer one axis (roll axis) symmetry frames like t-copter, spider quad copter etc. only because they provide better orientation. But I guess it should not be a problem with the big rectangular centre section.

@Vineet bro it will be available to everyone on RCIndia. I will post all my .dwg files with dimensions here so one can easily make that from household items like aluminium booms, plastic, glass fibre or PVC sheets. I will contact Vivek sir if he can make that using CNC at affordable price.
@Dreamfly sir thank you.
@Sunlikestar Sir actually i was working on fusion of QAV500 and HT FPV frames. I designed half of that too but left working on it later. The reason was overall weight and length of arms. It required more material and those expensive frames(quv500 and ht fpv frame) made from light and stiff black G10, milled aluminum, and custom aluminum spacers which i won't able to find and use here and normal plastic or glassfibre sheet material might increase weight so i went with simple frame specially designed by keeping Indian conditions in mind. I am planning to use exam board sheet and 1/2 aluminium arms which are easily available here so everyone on rcindia can make that and fulfill their dreams. All dimensions are allready tested because they are taken from my recent custom frame. This frame will have dual shock absorbers(cricket bat grip) one on arms where they sandwiched between two plates and other underneath the motor mount to reduce vibrations. It has special hooks so one can easily test it on string to get optimum gain on both axis as gain on X and Y axis will be different due to motor distance. Let's see how it goes.

Go! Dharmik Go!.  I really like the simplicity of parts and materials.  Let's C how it turns out.  If you plan on selling one let me know.  I would like to test one out.  I get frustrated designing my frames sometimes.  I takes the whole day or sometimes 2.

Sure sir. I am just worried about spacers and 3mm nut-bolts. I will have to search in every corner of city. They are not easily available here.

I am planning to use exam board sheet
Those plastic types? They seem very brittle! And if you are talking about those brown ones, they are made from cardboard and do not take well to vibrations! If you screw into them, after prolonged use the screws come loose as the paper layers come apart.

I am using those exam boards and I'd say they're an excellent solution. They're made of sw sort of a thermosetting fiber which makes them very strong.
A very nice initiative dharmik bro, go ahead!

Even i have used the same board, but this breaks if there is a hard landing. If you have a good landing gears then you should try with it..

Yeah there are so many types of boards available. I saw brittle one too in the stationary. This one has 2mm thickness and not brittle but foldable to some limit. The same thickness plastic sheet i am using in my current frame

@Vineet bro yes they were hand-tools only. I used normal kitchen knife and heated it up on the gas burner and removed rough portion out of the plastic tray and then refined the edges using cutting knife. Please have a look here.
http://www.rcindia.org/self-designed-diy-and-college-projects/quadrotor-from-bharuch/?action=dlattach;attach=644870;image

@LastRites haha yeah they are weird, i realized it later when i received motors but still they are doing their job well, never had any issue.

@Swapnil bro that FPV frame is not yet ready, i am busy with some other stuff but it should work as i took enough care while designing it. The dimensions are taken from my current quad frame. I hope i will get other required things from local market.

couple of questions.

1) What is length of those long nut bolt?

2) Do you think that you should add some suspension at bottom ? i think with rough landing long screw will bend very easily ?

Thank you friends for your input. Actually this video was shot in 720p which was 466MB of size, i had to scale it down. At this moment i am using 450 heli landing skid i recently bought from the RCI user Shannon. The bolts used are 75mm long. I am going to use 5.8GHz starter video link. I will post complete build log and 1st fpv video soon.

As i said before I got really amazing performance from hk 5.8ghz 200mW fpv setup. I found some interesting facts of rc305 fpv gear as well. When initially I powered up the setup I just got few feet range. After tuning it properly now it works perfectly. Please have a look at the pic of ground test attached below. You can see there are obstacles between txrx but reception was good enough until the buildings came blocked signal. It started showing white dots on the screen. I am sure the setup can do much more if you fly LOS
EDIT
Red dot shows walking distance not signals path ;)

I mean channel selection on both tx and rx needs to be correct using trial and error method as docs come with the setup are not true so you need to find correct combination of channel switches to get best out of it, and CP antennas might help as well to go up to 1 to 1.5km

Sir,the receiver supply voltage is from 9-12 volts and a 2s is not gonna work.
i tried with my own setup and it doesn't work well. sometimes doesn't even power on. But it worked perfectly fine with a 3s.

I am connecting the av out from rx to my big LCD at home is that ok :headscratch: :headscratch:

I once again try to explain the connections:

RX is connected to 12V adapter and its AV out is connected to my home LCD

TX is connected to 2S for input, i took the voltage using the voltage checker and it read 7.06 V and its VIN was connected to camera http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11977__1_3_inch_SONY_CCD_Video_Camera_PAL_.html

I got lights on both TX and RX, but on my LCD it used to say no input. But both TX and RX was bit warm after 5 mins of testing. :help: :help:

Will test them with 3S and one a mini TFT LCD

TX is connected to 2S for input
Try running It on 3s instead.
1. Connect ccd cam to the tx(don't forget to remove lens cover ), check polarity as well. If you look closely pin out info is printed on the board cam.
2. Connect 3S battery to the tx. You will see the red light below the tx.
3. Now connect AV cable to the rx. Yellow is the one that sends video signals. So connect that only others not necessary.
4. Connect 2s/3s battery to the rx and you will see the red led on.
5. Get any LCD/led TV or monitor and find AV-in port. You just need to connect your yellow cable to the yellow pin. If you  connect it to the TV you have to change the mode to AV as it might not show you transmission automatically.
Just make sure always hook the antennas first before you power up your tx or rx.
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: Shehwar on March 04, 2013, 04:28:00 PM
this is the perfect procedure.
i follow the same steps as described, but remember to power on tx before switching on Rx and Satya sir, 7.06 volts is too low for the setup to operate.

basics of tv videos signals state that a composite video signal voltage ranges from 9-12 volts hence the tx also needs the same amount of voltage to generate that level of signal and further more i think the LED is powering up because the Lipo is capable to provide more than enough power for the controller on the board to switch on. Hope i helped.

This is my second FPV flight done at the farm. It was a great fun flying this quadrotor. I am getting 12min of flight time from my 3300mAh lipo with fpv grear and camera, at last battery ran out of juice and quad landed roughly on the field, no damage! I just mixed some footage from the ground and FPV. This time i used CP antennas. I will post detailed review of CP antenna later. Wow so you were flying FPV or LOS?? i tried to fly using FPV (i have a video goggle) but it was very hard to judge the position and i guess i am not used to it so i was not able to control it too :(

But i really want to try FPV. I have one question bro, my quad is not very stable, sometimes there is very low freq oscillation. Can you help me to find it out why?? I tried to increase/decrease PI values but the wobbling is still there.

Arun and Rahul sure friends, let me know. Will try if i can help you guys. I am not experienced, still learning all these things. Best way to find PI settings is to get Optimum P(roll/pitch) gain first. I have set mine to 110 but i have flashed my ESCs so quad flies fine on higher gain as well. Satya bro this one was LOS but previous one was pure FPV. Yes it's hard to fly. I think LCD screen might help as you can have both views FPV and LOS together.

i will do everything in hex. Do you think Plush's should be flashed?

Here is one more FPV video. Got some boys wanted to see how FPV view looks, so i let them see live video feed on the LCD screen. Overall it was a fantastic day. I will go there again to catch some more action once i gain confidence over FPV. Trying to get rid of vibration.

I took this video few days ago when i was testing new firmware on KK2 FC. It seems gains were bit low and it was windy that day. It was hard to control the craft. Moreover one prop broke mid air but later everything went smoothly. Now doing some mods to the frame to get better results. The video edited using wondershare editor.

looks quite stable, lots of questions bro,
what camera for recording? quality is good.
what settings(gains etc) on kk2? version 1.6 or 1.6++?
how much range with the 5.8 ghz u have got so far?
how did the prop break? was it damaged already or out of the blue? its scary.
props il suggest hobbyking soft fly ones. lol. slowly fly actually.  i have crashed into walls with it and flown again . they just bend. u can bend it back and use for entire day if needed or maybe weeks. rapid escs are awesome  ;D .

Hi Pravesh, i am using HK HD wing cam for recording and sony ccd as a flight cam. I have flashed the board with kk v1.6 fw. I haven't tried 1.6++ but its lit, mid and high SL rate seems to be good for fpv. We drove 15-20kms to the village for fpv flying. We couldn't fly over the farm where we planned before due to tall grass so we flew over their cricket ground. The props i have are gemfan copy. They don't brake easily but that day one prop did it and gave up in the air. It broke from the hub. I quickly replaced it with new unbalanced prop that you see vibes in 2nd part of the vid. The screen i have is too small(4.3"), so planning to get 7" or higher later. I haven't accurately measured the video link yet but we have 2.0km+ straight road in the GIDC where i am planning to test both RC and Video link if i get time.

hi dharmik, thank you for the reply. the good thing bout 1.6++ is u can do flips and stunts and when u leave the sticks it self levels ;D. even im using 1.6, version. planning on 1.6++. 1.5 had a bug where acro mode was not tuneable.
gemfan from bevrc are good. they are thick and stiff and original. or rcdhamaka plastic props which dont break easily.
you can use the same 4.3 screen, make a HMD(head mount display) and put 2x or 3x fresnel lens in it, ul have full immersion it will feel like 12 inch display or bigger, or temporarily u can use 2x reading glass. let no sunlight in. put a DVR if u start getting blue screen due to signal breaks, i dont know but dvr seems to solve it.
im confused about which camera to buy, been looking at 808 #16 camera. but not sure. what would u go for?

reading glasses in optical stores. 200rs.
fresnel lens ebay. u can use reading glass till fresnel lens arrive. they are cheap . 5-15$, u can cut it to shape. and buy the book reader size. install them inside HMD. im still searching for fresnel lens locally but no luck so far. probably ebay it.

OMG!! Pravesh bro this Fresnel lens looks interesting stuff. I just searched over eBay and it seems we can also make big screen projector. Thank you very much as didn't know about this thing. So have you tried it for your fpv?
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: pravesh736 on June 18, 2013, 12:02:10 AM
i have tried 2xreading glasses and it will work but have not used for actual fpv flying, i use a 7 inch monitor, going to buy reading glasses tomorrow and will report after flying with it. have to order fresnel lens from ebay. 7 inch monitor HMD is too big.
now i want to get a 3.5inch one or 5inch one and make my own fatsharks with these fresnel lens...lol
fresnel is best as u can install it in HMD(headmountdisplay/homemadedisplaysetup).
there are people using 3.5-5inch monitors(480p) with fresnel lens specially for quads stunt flying. the display will be crisp even on edges.

I have been testing my quad few days ago inside the room. I have flashed v1.6 on my KK2.0 board. It feels so stable, however it looks like my receiver has some issue. i think u got carried away with the posts, hehe . thank you for the info.
my box was a simple pressure cooker box in which i managed/DIY to fit my head. lens from VC Sir.
the monitors clarity with the 2-3x lens is better than googles image but i use googles cause its not heavy like these, the idea is to keep sunlight out or u will not get the immersive feeling and also curve the lens while installing in box so that the final image is rectangle.

Yes red brick 30a esc can be flashed with simonk, altho they are not very simon k friendly,
Issues have been reported while flashing and after flashing.

Its a nice LED work. i suggest to get a green laser pointer pen, hook it on your quad vertically, in center, pointing downward and see the magic. it will give an illusion that a stick is holding the quad.

This time we decided to visit my friend Viral's village. It's really wonderful place having river just behind his house. We hired a boat and went to the beautiful location. We spotted croc as well enjoying sunbath, but as soon as we reached that site it ran into the water, we missed oppertunity to grab it in the video but we found many good shots. The jello was reduced to the great level. I found the secret to get rid of it. I will post on my blog.

Hi all, i have been flying my scratch built(self design frame) quad from past few months. I got some really nice footage from this quad and now decided to give it some improvements especially for the frame. My current frame made of plastic exam board sheet which did it job well but it's not sturdy however i don't see any difference during flight but when i hook camera it gives me some vibes and jello effects in my video. So i requested Satya bro(quadkopters.com) to cut frame for me from my cad files. I received my frame yesterday and i was surprised to see how well it was crafted. The material is G10 black 1.5mm thick glassfibre sheet very stiff and sturdy. I see very neat and clean work. I would like to thank Satya bro to help multirotor lovers in real mean. I am sure many people will soon come with their self designed frames. I am now designing one more frame  but till now i would like to show some snap of my XtremeX frame got from QK.

Yep Satya bro gave me some options to choose from like indian glassfibre, chinese G10 black glassfibre and carbon fibre in 1mm, 1.5mm & 2mm thickness.

Acrylic sheets are made using some plastic. but G10 or Glass Fiber sheets are made using sheets made up of Glass Fiber.
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame

So the G10 must be much more stiff (and heavy) for the same thickness, right?
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: satyagupta on April 22, 2014, 11:06:23 AM
it indeed is very stiff but not very heavy, but it would be slightly heavy than acrylic sheet

@Satya

Dharmik mentioned 'carbon fibre'. How does it differ from glass-fibre in terms of weight, stiffness and cost?
I'm hoping to start designing a quad frame, but I'm not familiar with the afore-mentioned materials.
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame

hmm you can go with the acrylic or thin MDF/Plywood or like dharmik bro did you can use the exam pad.

For my very first quad i used 5mm plywood, was pretty heavy had to cut lot of parts out of it.

I wanted a CNC cut frame from you. What I'm trying to ask is, which is the best material you can provide in terms of stiffness, weight and cost.
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: satyagupta on April 22, 2014, 11:39:53 AM
this is a glass fiber: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_fiber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_fiber) using this fiber a sheet is made and using several layers glued with resin, glass fiber plate are made. Number of sheets vary depending on the thickness of the plate.

Similarly this is carbon fiber: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_(fiber) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_(fiber)) and using layers of such sheets glued with resin, Carbon Fiber plate are made.

Glass fiber is good and cheap compared to Carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber are very expensive but at the same time they are very sturdy, stiff and light weight
Title: Re: Unveiling XtremeX QuadCopter FPV Frame
Post by: satyagupta on April 22, 2014, 11:41:43 AM
If you have limited budget then go with glass fiber they are 60-70% cheaper than carbon fiber

I just need drawing of the cutting in dwg or dxf format and i will get it cut. If you want i can send you a estimate pricing just drop a mail to webmaster(at)quadkopters.com with your drawing and thickness of the sheet that you want.

FPV QuadCopter - Boat Filming
Last year i went to my friend's house which is just near the river Narmada. We had a great day filming over the river. In this footage we saw the boat coming towards us, we quickly flew quad over there to grab it in the frames. I was flying LOS and when i landed quad i found that i forgot to switch on the SJ1000. That was a LOL moment. We missed nice footage and battery ran out of juice hovever we got it from the ground from the phone.
