Guys,

In the US version of ebay, I am only seeing the 2.4GHz versions and not 72MHz versions of Futaba 6ch radio. Is the 72Mhz technology obsolete?

Secondly, in the 2.4GHz, there are few that are listed as just 2.4 while others are 2.4 FASST. Are these two different models or same?

Futaba has only one 2.4 system at the 6 channel level (so far), and it is FASST.  So plain "2.4" should be the same as "2.4 FASST".

Even though Tower does not carry it, Futaba does not seem to have discontinued it.  It is still featured in their product list.

Tower not carrying it is yet another definite sign that the age of 2.4 has really dawned on us.

Here are few links on the discontinued products.

And this from futaba site. Yes your question on FM sets about being discontinued is a trend followed by all leading radio cos. like JR, Futaba, Airtronics etc

I would suggest a 2.4 ghz system

There is  a lot of info especially on the Futaba 2.4 G
http://www.rcindia.org/radios-and-receivers/crash-on-futaba-fasst/

Check this out  before you decide.

BTW I heard  2 more cases of Crashes due to Radio linkage since then on FASST .
Anwar is that tempting to start again  ;D ;D ;D

Yep, I am sure they are "unexplained"  8-)

Even Tower Hobbies (which is like the mothership for RC) is getting away from non-2.4 ;D

BTW My Assan Hack Module is on the way .
So I guess I am going to have the best of both worlds :
72 mhz and 2.4 G in the same Transmitter ;) :D

Yes one rests  some where in the trees , the other landed when it lost contact and the throttle cut after take off BTW both were futaba   ( rubbing it in ) ;D ;D

Pankaj ,
Read This :

You can  convert a Mhz Type Tx to switch between both.

I am from the old school of thought I prefer using Mhz transmitters and was considering 2.4 G only if I can have economical receivers .
I am do not accept being limited to use of only original company receivers  which are around twice the price of other available options.

Sai,

The 2.4GHz Module looks interesting. Would surely like to follow your experience with the hack module. Once that works, I guess you would need to stock some of these for others.  :)

These Cheap  B**t**ds have all the reason to discontinue the FM league and milk flyers thru their 'Propriety' 2.4G systems. Now you cannot just buy the Tx and say good buy to these OEMs... you get stuck to buy thier Rx for life. I really curse myself for not going for a FM 9C and Assan instead of a T7C. Now I am striving hard to get an economical 6CH midrange Rx!! Buhuuu   :'( :'( :'(

Nope, you should have gone for a module based radio. You made a bad choice, and it is not the fault of 2.4Ghz.

Or you can still do a Assan hack on your Futaba 7C ;)

I have seen one person switch the same RX among multiple planes.  Since there is NO "model-match" in Futaba (unlike JR/Spektrum), it is not that painful.  He uses small servo extensions  on each channel on the receiver, so that he does not plug and unplug directly on the receiver itself.  He has labelled the servo extensions coming out of the receiver, and similarly tagged all the connections from the servos/ESC on his planes. All he does is connect the servo lead tagged '1' to the servo extension from the receiver marked '1' and so on.  The receiver is attached to each of the fuses using sticky velcro strips, so pulling them out and moving them to another plane is easy.  A receiver like the R617 is quite light weight, but can be used on any sized plane from foamies to really big ones.

Best of both worlds ;D

I also had to jump through some hoops to get my setup running (because of sourcing items from different continents)... details here :

And I have couple of Corona receivers now.
