It was a Magma Mutliformat workstation XL (DJ Controller Case Aluminium Box) weighing 11.2 kgs. from Thomann.de, Germany.

Product Price:                          Rs. 13,206.76 (which included INR 3,600.00 or 50 Euros)
FCY CONVERSION MARKUP FEE : Rs. 462.24
SERVICE TAX - MARKUP FEE:      Rs. 64.71

Will I be charged extra at custom?
These Boxes are not made in India to charge any Custom Duty on these to safeguard India Market, first of all.
I was actually not aware of all these extra charges.
Will I face any issues...?

Please advise!

RAJA090

I think they definitely ask for some papers from you such as IEC , reason for import, invoice etc. Wait for few days.

DJ Nshyap

What is IEC document?

Can I give the print out of the PDF. format bill which I have received from Thomann.De.

Even in the box they have mentioned the correct price and shipping charges.

I never knew people pay for custom for things which are not manufactured in India, this is not logical even.

To add...It came through DHL International Courier.

Thank you!

RAJA090

Go to the Mumbai customs website, you have all answer for your questions and doubts. More over it may helps you to have better understanding about import and export.

santanucus

It does not appear to have come through DHL. Else it wouldn't have gone to Foreign Post Office. Looks like it came through the postal department. That is good in fact. DHL etc. are a big fraud and they take huge amount of money in the name of customs. Postal department charges the actual amount of customs duty.

Almost all items imported from abroad are charged customs duty except exempted ones. IEC is Importer-Exporter code. If you don't have it then they may impose a nominal fine.

Thank you very much for the information.

I called Mumbai Foreign Post Service who informed the product was sent to Bangalore Sub Foreign Post Office, i.e, on 4th November 2015. But all the three numbers keep on ringing with no answers and one number is out of service.

But I am very worried by seeing the following news:

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/147012/goods-foreign-parcels-fall-prey.html

I hope they don't mess with my shipment or else it would be a nightmare for the department.

But dont they need to have CCTV CAMERA for such important PLACE where things are STOLEN/ROBBED so easily. Its a SHAME to the GOVERNMENT MANAGEMENT as it brings such a DISGRACE for the ENTIRE NATION for which FOREIGN COUNTRIES mentions...NOT SHIPPING TO INDIA....and when asked the International Market give such a Shameless reply of product being stolen or returned with nothing inside...

Its high time people should come forward to save the image of India at large.

This link will help you to calculate the Custom Duty of a particle item for Imported Items

You can ignore "CTH" column

He was about to give an estimate but the phone again got CUT...NOW the Phone is OUT OF SERVICE...SUCH A PITY and Shame... Sent an email though with a little hope of getting a reply..42% isnt it too much :-( Will keep posted...

Amazing Stuff came to know from Custom Inspectors and Superitendant of Custom Office:

**Anything coming by Postal is either 14% or 42% of the total value: (35+3+4)

**10% of parcel are not detained as they just detain 90% of parcel in a random manner, so flashy covers gone case

**They get Currency Conversion chart every 15 days online which they take print outs.

**They would NOT hand over the detained parcel in the Foreign Post office if you CANNOT provide a GOVERNMENT ADDRESS ID PROOF, Voter ID, Adhar, Passport, DL etc of the address mentioned in the parcel.

**Shipment will come through Post office to your local PINCODE Post Office the next working day.

**NO ONE ASKED FOR BRIBE...

**They will ask for INVOICE with Shipping Charges, Bank Statement or Screenshot of Payment to Seller.

DJ Nshyap

The procedure is too too lengthy....You need to have Patience to get your items or else you will have to RUN from buildings to buildings.

1st the Foreign Post office will tear open the bag and then will make a Way Bill, Invoice and then will send it to Custom office. Then the Custom office will also check the item by opening the Box. You have to take the documents to Custom office and he will prepare a Duty bill. The amount will be 42% (35% +3% +4% ) of the product FLAT.

Then they will send the Duty Bill to the Register Clerk to record.

Then the Register Clerk will take the Duty Bill back to the Foreign Post office.

The Foreign Post office will tie the parcel will Coconut strings along with India Post office Adhesive tape.

Then the staff will throw away the parcel to some carrier and the carrier will take the parcel to some Godown and then it will be taken to the nearest post office along with the duty bill and you pay the bill amount to the postman and get the parcel.

PARCELS ARE HANDLED IN WORST MANNER...I have Seen items marked as FRAGILE were THROWN about 2 feet away...God knows what will be left inside...

***THEY NEVER CALL CUSTOMER. IF CUSTOMER DOESNT CALL WITHIN 3 DAYS IT IS SENT BACK TO THE CUSTOM OFFICE OF SHIPMENT FROM WHERE IT CAME...

Finally y'day my item customs cleared and out for delivery.

All below are based on my experience, you people might have different experience in customs.

Monday I sent mail to Bangalore customs, they replied in the evening to send "Order details/paryment details" so I sent via mail, but I didn't get any reply after that. So went y'day to customs office(Queens road, Bangalore) at 10AM, I gave invoice & bank statement to one person(he is customs employee, office in ground floor), he searched my tracking no, but unable to find, so he ask me to check with one lady to get the local tracking number who sits 15 feet away from him (she is from foreign postal department), so I went her & she gave me local tracking number in 2 mins. Then customs person took my Invoice and Bank statement to Superintendent of Postal Appraising Department(SPAD). He said i've to pay customs duty, so I asked how much, he said approximately 50%, so I asked to reduce some percentage, he said(SPAD) above 2000/- rupees it will be ~50%, after 2-3 mins negotiations nothing happen, then I said to proceed for customs formalities. Finally customs duty came around Rs-2000. Finally he asked whether you'll collect the parcel here or via postal, I said if possible I'll collect here only. In next 5 mins he finished his process( all took only 15 mins)

But other person has to do billing, but he came to office only at 11:15am, so I waited, when billing person in office, SPAD called billing person to do billing for mine , billing person has around 20 billing, he completed everything (only manual writing in big notes), it took around 30 mins. Around 11:45am he completed and given to postal department(customs & postal department siting just 10 feet distance in same hall). I've to pay my customs duty to postal departement only.

In postal department(Assistant post master) , she went to basement for checking postal things(where all foreign postal items comes), there I waited for 15 mins, one guy from postal he ask me to go to basement to check whether she is willing to give my parcel here only(otherwise why you're unnecessarily wasting you're time here). So meet her in ground floor, she ask me to wait for 5/10 mins in her desk, i waited again. She back to desk in 10 mins and she asked me all the details, she ask me to give ID and address proof, but I was having only ID proof(PAN card), I didn't carry the address proof, she said, they need both ID and address proof as it is in parcel, then only they'll deliver the parcel there only(because of foreign parcel, they need both), as I already know this, it is not hurt me much. around 12:30 I left customs office.

From 10:15 am to 12:30PM, I just watching what Customs and Postal department is doing, based on this below my observation

Postal department(I'll cover only how our parcel going to customs/filtering for customs)
  - all foreign parcel comes from basement to ground floor in big big bags, their one lady just opening the big bags, takes 10 to 20 parcel in here desk and reading the barcodes one by one, each parcel reading she touch and sense the parcel, if she thought to take for customs just she kept it separately(parcel handling is very worst). every 10-20 parcel she takes 2 or 3 parcel for customs, just it is a random pick, sometime it is her instinct. Items before giving to customs, she prepare some paper for customs(remaining items are customs are cleared).

Customs side:
- after that customs took that those items, they opened each item and preparing paper for that.
- Then it is up to us whether paying customs duty or not.
- If you're willing to pay customs duty, then just sent mail to them, once they replied asking "send order details/payment details), then walk to customs required details.
- if you're not willing to pay customs duty,  then just sent mail to them, once they replied asking "send order details/payment details), then  walk to customs, write letter in A4 sheet and ask them to return the item, so they will return the item as per you're letter.
- if you don't do any thing, then item may remain in customs or someone from customs will use item(this is just my thought)

hyan
