Recently, a friend of mine ordered a set of sunglasses that are claimed to be built specific for RC/modelling purposes.

http://www.modelglasses.com/innovationplus.htm

It did not arrive on time, so he complained, and they sent him another pair.  Finally both sets arrived, so he gave one set to me as a gift.  I never believed in these gimmicky gadgets (especially when they are pretty expensive), but I was really surprised how effective they were !  :o  :o  :o

They come with different shades, and the "yellow" ones were working best. They seem to take the glare out and improve visibility on even hazy days (quite common here).  Others who tried the glasses also were so impressed that they are all pretty much going for these (including my brother).

I hate sounding like promoting a product, but this one was one of the unusual occasions where a product has truly surprised me. May be we are all getting old  ;D

I had a chance to try a friend's yellow one at dusk. I was about to pack up, but these glasses brightened up the view so much that I was able to have one more flight. I have no experience with the other tints and other light conditions.

Ah, its good to see there are some others who found some value in these things.  I am not all alone !

For that kind of money, I would definitely buy Polarized sunglasses from Polaroid or Ray-Ban here in Chennai itself!! They are also very good!! Right now I use polarized glasses from Miami Blues and they serve the purpose very well!! Better glare reduction than regular sunglasses!

Chan - These are completely different in terms of "brightness" as Rajesh said.

Many of us have polarized sunglasses from good brands, but these "yellow" RC specific ones are in a league of their own !

Try asking for yellow colour polarized glasses and see the wierd look the salesmen give you  ;D

These yellow polarized sunglasses are marketed as driving glasses used for night driving! Mostly to cut the glare from oncoming vehicles! I have seen one though I have not used it!

The modelglasses.com guys call their yellow ones "Cat 0 (light-enhancing)".  And they do enhance !

RayBan used to have their "Ambermatic" sunglasses. Their shade was - you guessed it - amber. Dunno if still available. I need glasses for both near and distance vision and am very troubled by glare. Have found my solution in Varilux Transition lenses. They are available in photo brown and grey. Clear at night, darken when exposed to UV light. Super when the sky is overcast ! One set of spectacles - 24 hour utility.

Prescription lenses cost around INR 4,000+. These cover near to distant vision with continuous transition unlike bifocals. The lenses are photo sensitive and darken/lighten very quickly.

Non photo sensitive transition lenses are also available. I presume these would be a bit cheaper.

One - very important - point in choosing lenses. It is entirely possible that the lenses are just tinted and do NOT provide UV protection. All branded products do so but one cannot be certain with these.

You don't need variolux glasses for RC flying.
Distant vision as far as prescription glasses go is anything beyond 15 feet- definitely beyond 20 feet or 6 metres.  Variolux helps u see clearly  between 1 and 15 feet. So get a good prescription for distant vision glasses and order a photochromatic pair which is made of glass and not plastic ( plastic gets scratched easily and it is difficult to get the oil off easily- they also cost 3 times what glass lenses cost)
Good Photochromatic glasses only change colour when exposed to UV- so they cut off varying amounts of UV. cheap ones are harmful- they reduce the amount of visible light without blocking uv. So the pupils dilate (due to low intensity of visible light ) and more harmful uv enters the eye.

Please read the following part of my post

QuoteI need glasses for both near and distance vision and am very troubled by glare.

Having only distant vision glasses would mean changing glasses whilst working on the plane (assembly, fueling, etc.) . A PIA. So this is a specific, practical, working solution.

Latest count on our field (one of two fields that we have) is that 5 people have the RC glasses from ModelGlasses UK ;)

Not sure how many have it on the other fields, haven't been there for a few months now.

About 4 or 5 years ago, it was a fashion statement to wear yellow tinted night glasses to the disc. Every wannabe was seen donning them. Out of curiosity, I had asked an optometrist and he surprised me by saying that they did indeed enhance night vision. I tried out a pair at the shop and was amazed at the difference it made. I remember this was an expensive pair around Rs.2000/- ( in the year 2005). However, I wasn't going to be seen dead wearing one! I do possess a pair of Ray Ban Ambermatics and they are wonderful for night driving on the highway.

I was curious to know how Polarized lenses would help in RC.
Polarized glasses would cut off the glare from reflected surfaces. So they would be ideal in water-sports, driving ( reflections from road/cars ) , but in RC we are looking at the sky, so how does polarization help here ?

Incidentally, I was out in the market looking out for a good pair of sunglasses, that would help in RC as well as for general use. Would be good to hear to know what everyone likes. RayBan Aviator is high on my list, but they are not polarized, so wanted to rule out the benefits of using polarized lenses.

Re: lens color, from what I have researched, dark brown is the one we should have, as that increases contrast. Grey/green do not increase contrast though they preserve colors.

I would have completely endorsed the one from http://www.modelglasses.com without thinking twice, but they may not be stylish for general use :(
