What is the criteria that one could/should use for evaluation? Admittedly, there is a personal assessment involved, but some guidelines would help. Particularly when the "steps" are fairly wide.

I guess we can start by defining "skill".  Building skill, flying skill, even attitude skills (like volunteering to help others).  Are you looking at any specific one, or a well rounded one that takes into account all of this ?

Then comes the weightage of each !  And after that, we need some criteria to put marks against each of these.

Since RC stands for radio control - I would say its more of flying skills.

1)Beginner - Like Trainee/software Engineer - Learning to fly/Crash, learning basic theory and can land w/o crashing at the end.
2)Intermediate - Like Senior Software Engineer/Leads - Able to fly confidently, are able to help Beginners, Ocassional crashes, can design/build/maiden planes easily with very little help from forums/other fellow flyers.
3)Advanced - Managers/Architects/CEOs? - Will fly anything, can do torque rolls with eyes closed (that was probably too much to ask). Can build fly anything in their specialization.
4)Ultra Advanced - Tareq?, Oh man, I will own that Heli some day

Vinay is right in saying it should - primarily - skill in operating radio models, be it cars, aircraft, whatever if "RC skills" is the reference.  Though aircraft do come to the fore here. Yes, it could be expanded into (aero)modelling skills.

The can of worms could well be used to compost some fertiliser for good growth!

So if operating skills are the focus, and aircraft are the first ones to be tackled, the two big schools of thought are pattern and 3D. I am guessing scale flying can be part of patterns.

In that case, it is easy to define a set of maneuvers either way, and how well someone executes them would be one way of categorizing the "RC Skills".

Cars can be tackled similarly.

I do see serious grounds for people who build more than they fly to object to the name "RC Skills" (as opposed to something like "RC Maneuver Skills" )

Are we trying to just setup a poll, so that people can self evaluate their flying / driving skills ?

Or, are you planning to use this in a local group/field so that you can classify people ?

I think the thread started with setting up some guidelines for your self and then get assessed on those by some one. I think we can use IRCHA guidelines they have 8 grades of skill level free to download each level has certain things that you need to perform perfectly to master that level. I think it it can be a good way to assess your self
