Title: DIY CNC Router / Mill Project - PCB engraving Test
Post by: Power_user_EX on March 25, 2013, 08:00:25 PM
Hey guys!
I always wanted to make custom parts for my Robotics and RC projects (Quadcopter). While I was working on a Hexapod project I thought of making a CNC for cutting Aluminum sheets the way I wanted. So ... I was working a DIY CNC project past couple of months. Finally my CNC is alive and working :D
And here is a test video of my CNC engraving my Initials on Copper Clad :D

This look amazing... How long it take you for the planning and building? ??? ??? And approximate amount spent? ??? ??? You really have done a great job.. {:)} {:)}

Wow! that's some cool beast.
I've always wanted to convert my tabletop vertical milling machine to cnc...but never had the courage to diy cnc it. Now you've shown the path. perhaps its time to take the plunge. Regards Nilanjan

Thanks! Well ... I had plans of making CNC from 2010 but did'nt gave it much attention. In April 2012 I took it seriously and started gathering info. In July 2012 .. I made a commitment to do it and started researching more aggressively and getting some help from pros overseas. Selecting and Acquiring 'parts' took a very long time - around 3 months. In november I started making the final design. Around 20th dec the assembly was done. Next I had designed my custom electronics which were bugged :( Got industrial electronics and finally got it working. In Feb-2013 all setup and configuration stuff was finally over and ran some tests to see if CNC actually works like I wanted it to. And it worked :D
Edit : The 'CNC' cost goes around 55K ... It might seem a bit high .. I'll try to lower the cost in 2nd Version and an ultra low-cost 3rd version.

Did you procure the stepper motors, lead screws and linear bearings from abroad or from the local market? So how much did it all cost? Regards nilanjan

Oh My God, This is superb are you selling it aswell? why dont you open a RC cnc online store, selling cut parts and frames? ;) I will be your good customer.
This is amazing, we always dream to have a personal CNC.

All of them are from local market. Had to contact a few manufacturers for Steppers and Lead Screws. Got lead screws manufactured from a nearby manufactrr but ended up not using those lead screws coz after some weeks after that I got stainless steel lead screws from Gulalwadi - Mumbai.
For parts like shafts and Linear Bearings also I had to contact local dealers & stockists.

Great work Power User, the video looks awesome. I've been thinking of doing one from last year as well. I have all the stuff sitting in my drawers from controllers to couplings :D...You post will ensure the motivation is kicked back in.
What motors, driver and controllers are you using? and software? Mach3 or LinuxCNC

Planning to make and sell low cost hobby cnc for the masses. I want to see a CNC in the house every robotics enthusiast , RC Hobbyists , DIYers etc.. in India. Just imagine what all things we can do if we all have mini CNC at our homes :D Atm I am working on custom low cost parallel cnc breakout boards and stepper motor drivers.
Open to any suggestions , ideas , etc.. etc..
BTW ny1 into custom designed model rockets ?

Hi everybody, It is a dream of every hobbyist to own a cnc machine. I am glad to post this photo of cnc router that i built myself. It cost me around 20 k including 24 volt power supply.constant current driver and spindle. I love to build machine. I will build machines for anybody who wish to have one.Depending upon the size the cost may be as low as 12 Interested guise may mail to

Hello LastRites. Thanks for interest shown in diy cnc.The details are as bellows. Table size 600 x 400 mm.Cutting area 480 x 300 mm. 4.2 kg/cm Nema17 stepper motors. 135 watts spindle.Max tool dia 3.2 mm. 6mm dia leadscrew with 1 mm pitch gives 0.0025 mm /step. Accuracy 0.1 mm {Estimated} Can cut plastic,Hard wood up to 20 mm.Not tried on aluminium. No costly linear parts.X axis rides on aluminium sqaare tube with 606 ball bearings. Y and Z axis rides on S S round tube with same bearings. Total 36 ball bearings are used. The controller circuit is built on vero board using L297 / L298 and driven by lpt port. Now Iam working on a open frame machine, which will be driven by 4 Nema 23 steppers. ie 2 motors on X axis. !000 watts trimmer router as spindle, sturdier steel frame and polymer bearing pads for linear motion.

Hi all, I am back after a while. In mean time built this cnc machine for Rahul. Pictures of machine and test patarn. Some members want to know about cutting foam with soldering iron.here are some tips. there is no knead to modify soldering iron in any way. simply remove any oxide buildup on the tip. tie a ordinary needle or any thing such as straightened safety pin with bare copper wire on the tip and your done .Higher the wattage better it will cut. Many people use this technique to make decoration in Ganpati festival. Hello. If you don't have a lot of experience in woodworking and you need to buy some expensive tool or other equipment, I recommend to spend some time and research necessary materials and info.Hello there. What do you plan to do with it? From my experience, if you need something powerful for cutting solid wood then look for Bosch or KREG ACS. If those are too powerful for you then look Fox Shop and Grizzly, which are more portable and suitable for home use. Nowadays https://tabletypes.com/best-inexpensive-diy-router-table-to-buy/ are the most recommended in the market that's why I chose cool router table.
