V22 Osprey VTOL (Multi-Rotor Control Board V2.1) Build

as i am revisiting every project that i could not complete

V22 Osprey Topped my list - here is the link of my old project and its website

due to my ignorance and lack of experience in rc at that time i was unable to complete it.

This time i thought of dong things a bit differently that i learnt from my hovercraft build that once i had the 3d model of the design it was much easier to make.

while placing my order at hobbyking i had purchased both the V3 and V2.1 multirotor board i plan to use the V2.1 in this aircraft

my setup is the following

Motors - 2 X DYS 2212/10
ESC - 2 X 30A DYS
Prop - 2 X 3 Blade 9x5 (standard and counter rotating sets)
Battery - 1 X 11.1V 3000mah or 2 X 11.1V 2200mah
Controller board  - HobbyKing Multi-Rotor Control Board V2.1 with Power Tower Firmware

the build wont begin until a next Friday (i have to attend the counselling at Manipal University on the 6th for admission to Aeronautical Engineering) but i have begun with the crude 3d rendering on Google SketchUp of the main tilt mechanism for the VTOL aircraft i am posting them below.

the biggest concern at the moment is the transition from hover to flight mode which i have yet to figure out since the tilt servos shall be connected to the Multi-Rotor Board.

so the second part of my hobbyking order arrived and it has some of the parts for this build will start with the tilt mechanism on monday

for the main tube i am thinking of using 10mm metal tube or cf tube as per availability rest is balsa construction as of now

attached are a few pictures of the parts

servos are for flight mode control and i am using futaba s3004 for tilt mechanism

The V22 osprey is a Tiltrotor aircraft which can effectively function as a helicopter and tranform into fixed wing flight while in air. when i first began this build in 2009 i could get the yaw and pitch stabilized using gyro and vtail mixers but pitch was a continual problem. the VPP of the osprey allow it to be stable in the pitch axis. this however was partially solved by tilting both the rotors in the direction opposite to the pitch to counteract it. as of now the hk multi rotor board does it all for me but still it is a really interesting project especially designing the tilt mechanism and aborting the flight stabilisation from the FC board while in aircraft mode or aiding it those two are the most challenging aspects of the rc version of the aircraft. worked all night on fanwing today so will start with this from monday onwards. i am uploading the ospreys photographs as in heli and aircraft modes below.

hi guys i had been working on the v22 for two days now and being inspired by gusty bhaiya's bandit log i am posting the complete build here

first two posts contain the build progress till now the next two contain the tilt mechanism (makeshift mechanism till i receive the dremel)

all parts were hand scaled to match the size i needed anybody wishing to make this aircraft can ask for the basic files i shall scan it and upload it here

i began the sheeting of the aircraft yesterday night it salmost done except for trimming and sanding beginning with the electronics just now

stage 1 of building was complete and the model finished testing also

excessive vibrations due to direct servo motor mounting made the plane uncontrollable.

phase 2 of proper design and build of the motor mount and tilt mechanism begins from monday

vibration killed my day

Hello Subbu!

Nice and challenging project. I had a suggestion regarding this build. Why don't you make the whole tilt mechanism controllable with just one high torque servo. I mean, Like we sometimes make split elevators controllable with a single torque rod using single servo. That can sure be worked in the tilt mechanism as well unless you want rotors to do differential sometimes. I can draw something up in Google Sketchup if you don't understand what I am saying. Just a suggestion from me. i hope it helps...

i understand what you are saying but the differential motion of servos is what controls the pitch and yaw axes in helicopter mode but i could somehow have two individual servos for the differential motion and the whole set up on a high torque servo for complete aircraft mode transition

but i guess the two individual servos could do the same talk themselves thanks for the idea

if i interpreted what you said wrongly please kindly point it out also the sketchup pics would be nice

You are exactly there. Well, I haven't read about tilt rotors as much as you did. So, You know better than me. As the differential motion of the rotors is concerned, Two servos can and should be used.

If you need any help in 3D modelling, Feel free to tell me. It would be a pleasure for me.

Hi dharmik i have infact seen that thread on rcgroups but i am unable to incorporate that tilt mechanism in avatar gunship into the osprey system. i will try once again.

Yeah but it looks like they have modified servo arm to get proper grip. In some close up shots you might able to see that.

it's realy awesum m also planing the same project for my final year project but unable to find the right combination of servo motor nd stability of plane so plz help me by shearing some parts information nd all the very best :)

Dear Pikle6,

The excessive vibration in the servos can be because of one or both of the following reasons.
a) There is a mechanical feedback of the rotor vibration, through the frame, to the control board. This feedback can be minimized by placing the board on TWO or MORE layers of foam based double sided tape.

b) The pitch gain pot on the board is set to maximum. Set it to zero AFTER performing the step 'a' above and gradually increase it to a point just below the point where vibrations start.

Please don't give up this remarkable effort, not at least  before you have tried the above steps.

subbu go through this below thread !you will get some idea! don't connect motor base directly to the servo horn it will have big amount of gyration and vibration! use something indirect method!horn is supported with only one end and not strong enough to hold!
