Hello forum members!
Waiting for my electronic parts for a long time now >:( and salary time also has not arrived.
Had some ISO foam with me so thought to put it to some use and started building my 3rd Scaled plane,
the P51-D Mustang.
Posting some pictures of the build process, please be informed that I am unable to post proper logs for my projects because of 2 things, the first being that I am a lazy person after working hours 8-) and secondly, to let others gain knowledge on how to build planes from unwanted waste and a little amount of cash, around 300 to 400 INR.
Note that she is going to be a completely scratch built model.
I used just one sanding paper, white adhesive to temperorily hold the blocks together and a cutting knife.
Some pictures below.

Experiencing the meaning of the word "scratch building"
some more pictures...
Coming out nicely - please continue. It is an ambitious project. All the best!
totally agree with VC sir...this plane is LEGEN-"wait for it"-DARY...LEGENDARY :salute: besties....
Going really well! Keep it up, paint it well! All the best!
Wow looks really great. Best of luck!
Nice work done.................. liked the finishing :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:
BEST OF LUCK
Very nice work dorwin...........................
ALL THE BEST
:)
Dear All,
Firstly, ;D ;D Thank you everybody for showing so much interest.. really appreciate your concern and wishes!! {:)} {:)}
Today was not so hot, the climate seems to be coming down gradually, so I cut the blocks to make my wings and sat in my balcony and started the sanding.
Cutting is the easiest part but sanding it to get as close to perfection is the hardest.
It took me a good 21/2 hours to sand one wing, finally got the curve I needed.
Well, posting some pictures of today's progress.
Please let your suggestions flow, I thrive on them >:D >:D
The pictures I clicked are from a VGA Camera so the images are not that good, One picture from my 8 MP Mobile makes the file size around 4 to 5 Mb..not advisable!
Here are some more!
Off to cook fish now! :P :P the tail wing will be done tomorrow!
Chief, this is not a simple case of scratchbuilding, this is a sculpture!
Bravo!
lots of hardwork!!!!!
thats why it is coming out so nicely!!!!
Thank you VC bhai..almost sculpting..but this too has its downs :( lots of powdered foam in my lungs and nose even after wearing a mask..
will try to wet the foam and sand tomorrow, lets see, what happens!!
Thanks again, I will need a major part of suggestions from you and the foamy guys here!
Thanks Ash!
Yes indeed, its a lot of hard work for a guy who works 100kms away, travels 200kms daily, cooks, washes, works out and sands all evening and posts pictures so that some guys sitting on their computers and browsing the internet get motivated and take interest in the hobby!
Cheers to RCI!!!
It motivated me, guys like you and everyone here motivated me!
Bravo to all!
Guys,
As I had mentioned in my first post, that I had joined the blocks temporarily so I could sand the entire fuselage.
Well the temporary glue has been washed out and the blocks singled out, I use this practice for 2 reasons;
The first being, this way we can easily lighten the weight and secondly, make place to accommodate the electronics and cut notches inside for wires etc..
The following pictures say what I mean!

but +5 for that!
actually its true
Well, you are a hard working guy.It is seen in your Mustang.SWEET work there.Can't wait to see that bird fly. :salute: :salute: {:)} {:)} {:)} {:)} {:)} (:|~ (:|~ (:|~ (:|~ (:|~ (:|~
Ok guys,
Today, as soon as I reached my room, just had a little wash and started with the sanding of the elevator and the stabilizer..
So far so good! but!!! :headscratch: I have a huge problem..
I have a 4 channel 72mhz Starmax Tx, and a 6 channel Rx which I brought from one of my friends at around INR 1500 (don't know if its worth) He got a starmax EDF jet and did not want the radio..
It has not been used yet, will br using it to test the servos and that's it! it wont be of any use to me later, if anyone would be interested, I could sell it off to them in December.
Now, coming to the Mustang!
Here are some pictures of her, looks good, glides better too..
The only thing that has to be worked upon as of today is balancing it because its kinda tilting around 10Degrees to the right from the front nose view.
Lastly, I don't know if I can fly her using a 4 channel radio and a 6 channel rx, have not yet flown home made planes, so Please :help: me!
Just provide me with any details, diagrams anything that will possibly help me including the electronic system that I would need for this 250gm bird.
Appreciate any help! :help: :help:
Pictures follow...

some more
Vertical Stabilizer and the Starmax radio!! :salute:
Please bear with me..the joints are just temporary using super fine double sided tape, there is still a lot of trimming and sanding to be done!
Now that is REALLY beginning to look like a P 51 D - just a bit of work on the canopy aft section (IMG0227A) for the tear drop shape and you are home and dry. Make the ventral air intake/ scoop a little more pronounced.
I am sure a 4Ch Tx and a 6 Ch Rx can be paired as long as they are on the same frequency and use the same crystals. If I am not mistaken, one of my birds fly on the same configuration. Not to worry. Experts please confirm.
Well done Chief!
Thanks VC bhai!
Yes, The air scoop will be protruding down a little bit more, for the canopy, I suppose you are right! I still have to get that tear drop shape...completely exhausted today :( will be doing it in the days to come.
She indeed is going to be the best one I've ever made till now..
One question! do you have a circuit diagram as how to configure a 4 channel Tx to pair with this bird?
What I mean is can you tell me how to control 2 servos?
For Example: If I move the right stick to the right and the aileron on the right wing
moves upward while the aileron on the left wing moves downward and visversa.
Can this be achieved by using a "Y" servo wire?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
-Dorwin
I think you need a VTail mixer. Give me 24 hours,I will get back to you on this, unless someone else responds before that. Don't worry buddy, all that is easily taken care of. I am using a V Tail Mixer with a simple 4 Ch Tx and it does exactly that with a V Tail mixer onboard the aircraft. Will try to arrange one for you. You get on with the build.
All the best!
Oh Oh! :( I don't think I can find any V tail mixers here :(
I will call the LHS tomorrow and see if they have them..
I found a thread by Sahilkit, I did not know he sold them until now, but still, I am far away from December to get any mixers :(
Is there any other way to get this done ?
Alright! sorry for the mis-understanding, he does not sell them..
Sahilkit gave me my V Tail mixers and has been absent from this forum for quite some time now. He is brilliant. I will try and arrange it for you, but you could try Rcforall, they sell V Tail mixers, albeit at a higher price.
I know rcforall has them, but shipping them to Kuwait will be a headache for both!
Thanks for the Picture Prateek, but its too small, can you try enlarging ?
sorry bro the speed of my internet connection is killing me! :banghead: :banghead:
redone- ;)
please download it from
http://www.mediafire.com/?e6b12z34nhv77hf
only 12kb
If it is only 12K, just upload it here !
cant! :( :'(
it is actually a bmp file and of 2.6 Mb!!! :'( :'( :'( :giggle:
so i transferred it to a .rar file and then came to know that those are not allowed! :banghead:
so i had no option but to upload it to some file hosting site {:)} >:D
BMP is an extremely inefficient image format. Please use something like MS-Paint (which comes in any Windows install) to convert it to a JPG, and then upload.
point noted sir! ;D
Got it! thanks Prateek, That is a "Y" wire setup which I am aware and have access to, I suppose this setup will make both servos move in the same direction?
So I probably will have to place the servos with its horns parallel to the ground right?
I mean if this is an option then why the V tail??
Admin bhai! shed some light please!
-Dorwin
bro you should watch daave power's videos for begginers they are of great help and answer all faq's  ;D
for the plane this will work definitely!
Thanks Prateek!
Will finish the sanding part as of now as salary time is still 5 days long... ;D
Hey Dorwin! I can't believe I missed out on such a awesome build!!! I've been busy working :( Its come out really good! And considering its you building it, the end product is guaranteed to be beautiful!! Oh and I don't think you'll have any problem with the Tx-Rx as long as they are running the same frequency crystals.. And the Y-connector aileron method is a tried and tested one so don't worry :) (I'll be using the same method on my trainer using 2 x HXT900s).. Best of luck with the build man!!
Hey Aneesh! there you are...and I was wondering where you disappeared..work eh? the health of Mandur people is in good hands, so no worries buddy.
Thank you for the prediction on the build, yes! it is coming out nicely.
Some sanding still balance on the tail side, and as VC said the canopy still has to be sanded to get the tear drop shape..
So, that's that..how were you and how is your trainer? painted it or still deciding?
Btw, the fields adjoining the Taliegao to St. Cruz road, is a good place for flying after the rains give up innit??
:) yea, those fields are pretty good.. Just passed through that area today.. Also these fields on the way to Aldona are pretty good.. Huge open fields.. My trainer is getting landing gear first, then paint.. When are you gonna be done with the sanding?
Ah! yes, the Porvorim Mapusa highway, awesome fields there..
We shall try there when I come down!
I will try and finish the sanding latest by tomorrow, if I have the time as Thursday and Friday is "Fiancees' day out" :giggle:
I wanted to ask you one thing, about your AUW, How much was your AUW and what setup did you choose?
Let me know too because my Mustang's AUW is around 250gms, the wing stiffening is still balance, but I don't think that the kebab skewers would be weighing much..
If I can get the electronic setup here, then its not far from completion and painting, if not then again like the Predator, packed and ready for, you know when.. :giggle: :giggle:
Lastly, I don't know what to say, I was idle for like 2 hours(forecasted idleness) so I made myself 5 control horns
will make the linkages as soon as I get some Ideas...
guys please don't laugh, its not that I don't want to buy these little things, they are just hard to find these here
Cool! You could start selling those control horn thingies there! ;D My setup is Towerpro 2409 motor on 3 cell 1600mAh LiPo.. My fuselage fully loaded weighs 520gms, didn't weight the wings but should be about 250gms.. So my best guesstimate is about 750gms.. With this power setup it goes vertical a shade under full throttle..

If you wanted to control a flying wing or a delta, or if you needed flaperons or stuff, then you would need a mixer, However, If you just want to control the ailerons with two servos instead of one, it can be done without a v-tail mixer. Just cut the leads of the two servos, join them in parallel and connect them to one of the servo leads(cut off previously) and connect it to the receiver. now both will work togather. I assume that you will fix them on each wing. fix them one facing the left and another the right and they will turn in opposite directions. I have done this on my spads and they work fine.
Here is a pic with servo extension attached but it is essentially the same. Hope this helps.
Edwin
Thanks a lot Edwin,
That answers all my questions, I will do this as soon as I get my servos in some days.
-Dorwin
Remember that whether "one control surface goes up and other comes down" depends on how the servo arms are connected to the servos. They have to be pointing to opposite directions.
If they point to the same direction, they will both move together.
I need some control horns. How much you charging for a bag of 100 pieces? I'm serious! {:)} {:)}
hahaha! thanks VC! I got the message....
If I make a 100 pieces, I will stop going to work and start this as a business;D
These are easy to make, you know those square PVC tubes? used in electrical house wirings?
Well I made them out using a knife edge cutter, a pencil and PVC tube.
Extremely easy to make, just mark, cut the outline and break with a pliers, then you can smooth-en the edges.
fimple!! isn't it ?

Have to invent a new word for VC's ability to get young "Reverse VCmysis" ;D
ok guys!
I am getting a 11.1V 3c 2200mAh Lipo and a charger both Turnigy for around 1600INR from a pal of mine as he does not need it.
Is it worth?
He has a 40-60 sized Brushless motor and a 60 A ESC too but I said I don't need that.
Let me know members!
-Dorwin
Today guys!
Yet again...my gate pass expired so these are the things I did all morning:
1. Sanded the fuselage and got the tear drop on the canopy.(almost)I think this is enough as I can make it more realistic after painting and detailing ( what say VC bhai)
2. Used my home made control horns on the rudder and elevator and they fit good and work alright.
3. Made place for the battery and servos, will cut out the exact place for the servos as soon as they arrive, probably by next week.
3. Made the nose assembly out of a shower gel bottle(I finally used it somewhere ;D )
That's it members, pictures follow.
-Dorwin

Some more pictures!!
The 3rd and the 4th pictures are of the nose section...
Nose section progress...
Getting there Buddy and looking great! Love the shower gel nose - Wattan idea Sirjee! {:)} {:)} {:)}

Thanks VC...Atlast I made some use of that shower gel bottle..
I am so anxious to get my servos, but salary has still not arrived :( well once its in my account, I will start assembling her and painting the bird.
What is the best material to use in place of piano wires?
I have some umbrella rods and some cloth hangers :headscratch:
And will this setup be OK? :headscratch:

Truly brilliant, great job. :salute:
Thank you Rohit and Manoj! :salute:
Today, finished the canopy, I was wondering if I needed to use a petg bottle for this, but realized that it would be a hard task. Last night made a transparent canopy but the gluing and sanding made it look weird!
So, finally today thought of another idea. I cut the whole canopy section from the fuselage and made it as one separate piece, so as I can mount and unmount the electronics anytime..
Finished with the ailerons, everything is almost ready, just need to dry fit her once and balance the wings!
Salary is still 2 days away :'( so here goes!
some pictures with the canopy section completely detached from the fuse, a dry fit picture and the whole 9 yards disassembled..
-Dorwin
Sanded the canopy section carefully to get the "seat" looks good! feeling better....
some more pictures..
the whole 9 yards... ;D
Wonderful build. Very refreshing to see the build pics.
I think the control surfaces are a bit fat than what they should have been. You would need more than the normal airspeed/power to fly this model. Further, the fat surfaces will produce more drag and the model would reach stall speed easily. But I am sure you would love this model. Nothing like building your own model and flying it.
-Ismail
Thanks Ismail,
As everything is scratch built, one needs comments like these to progress to perfection...
the wings will be sanded more, as I have now reinforced the wings with kebab skewers, and am confident that they wont break..
Once the servos arrive, will post better looking pics..
-Dorwin
Getting there..................... {:)}
Hello guys,
I had asked this question yesterday, but no one answered, maybe I should have opened up a new thread.
Ok, here goes.
My Mustang without electronics is approx. 230gms.
I am assuming that the following would be the electronics weight
Mustang = 230gms
Battery = 150gms
ESC = 40gms
4xservos = 4x9=36~40gms
Receiver = 50gms
wires and rods = 30gms
Total= 540gms~570gms
Now this is the option I have,
http://q8xtremehobby.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=16_20&products_id=53
http://q8xtremehobby.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=22_37&products_id=139
http://q8xtremehobby.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=22_38&products_id=143
Will this setup be suitable on the Mustang ? or do I need a higher power option?
Please shoot your answers so I can proceed with the build :( ??? :(
-Dorwin
This is a common configuration, all you need is a Y cable. No need for any V-Tail mixing, unless I totally missed the point.
Great effort

Thanks Anwar, shes coming out good!
I suppose you missed the point Anwar.
What I need is to know if this configuration is "OK" for the plane to fly at a good speed?
I have no experience with these motors, so just confused.
-Dorwin
it seems good ;D but the only thing not mentioned is the prop :o
what prop you want to put on it? ???
the servos are good and are only 7.8g(as listed by the site)
and the speed controller seems good
the motor is good but the commenting will only stop when you tell which prop you will use! >:D
Hey Prateek, thinking of putting on 8x4 prop!
which battery? ???
oops! 11.1v 2200mAh ;D
Tiger, just as a refresher, what are the dimensions of the model? HK has a lovely 4 Blade Prop, I would love it if you used that on your set up. But will it match?
o k it should work but i think by the size of the plane it is a BIG batt.
experts please comment

oops! and where was I when this was typed?
Anyways! today I had an approval interview with Chevron & Texaco and am now, approved as a Certified QA?QC Inspector in the Wafra oil fields!
And VC bhai, I am currently not going to buy too many things from HK, this because, my shopping cart is almost overflowing.
Had been calculating and reducing the weight of my cart!
I am thinking of making one myself..what say?
Challega?
Cahllega nahin Bhai, Daudega! Go for it. Congratulations on your certification. Party due....... (:|~
hehehe...not certification..approval VC bhai approval!!
I am an approved QA/QC now..
Yes! if I ever come to Assam or if you ever come to Goa I surely will throw a party for you.

Ok guys!
I got 2 futaba micro servos
3 micro servos normal
25A ESC
1600 mAh 11.1V Lipo
Battery charger
and a brushless motor for around 3200 INR
according to Kuwaiti currency, things are expensive, but do you think this is a fair offer?
the bargaining and cribbing is still balance! ;D
So hope to bring out the best from this deal.
The motor and the 2 futaba servos are used for around 6 flights(that's what he said to me)
Fingers crossed!
Is this deal worthwhile ?
-Dorwin
Look what I found for you. Will it match?

Y not go with Good HK electronics? they are lot cheaper and reliable as well.
Ok guys!
Now now, I cannot buy things from HK here in Kuwait because of many reasons.
What I did manage to get from a local hobbyist is:
2 x 25A ESC
2 x Balance chargers (one is art tech and the other is something else)
1 x 12V power adaptor
2 x esky digital servos
2 x Futaba S3114 Servos
1 x 1600Mah 11.1V lipo from Art tech
The Chargers are brand new, 2 Esky are new and one ESC is new.
All for 3200INR!!
Good Deal??
I will be buying a brushless motor and clevis's today, so lets see what they have in store.
Lastly, he was giving me a EDF kit with the motor for 500INR, I din't take it :( "zou baik"
Today, built the guts to cut the canopy and finally!
Made a plastic canopy from a mineral bottle..
this is how it looks as of now!!
That Cockpit and the Pilot are awesome! Well done Buddy!
Thanks VC!
give me an hour and I shall post pictures of something else... 8-)
Everything has a good side and a bad side!
My bad side is my "ignorance" I completely ignored the "expiry date and Production date Stamp" on the bottle and instead went on with the canopy!
This is the final result after painting and a little detailing.
another one...
this is just a dry fit guys, so it may look a bit weird!
The canopy looks awesome Dorwin!!

AWESOME!!!! :salute:
Medicineman, both of you come to Guwahati and we'll all party together........... ;D
Its comin out good man! working like this, I think my eyes will pop out on the floor! :giggle: :giggle: small details and all!
Of course! I will throw a boose + sheesha + karaoke party at Baga, because this is the last year of my Bachelor life..
And secondly, about the Motor, are you sure?
I think it may be underpowered or a slow flyer!
Forget,
Know what?
lets decide on the motor in Goa!
Let me paint her and pack her up!
Ok guys,
What paint scheme??
the super awesome Camo with shark teeth or the not so attractive traditional one like the silvery, starry and all shi**y paint kinda?
SHARK TEETH!!!! 8)
Check HK. They are selling a huge P51 in Black and Silver. Add Shark teeth and eyes to that and...............
Add Invasion Stripes, Yellow Checkerboard Cowling and above all RED / Red - Black Striped Spinner. WOW!
Yea! Shark teeth and red spinner nose thingie makes for a mean looking stang!
give me 4 hours!!
Medicineman that is a P 40 Warhawk. The large air intake augmented the Shark Mouth (Open Jaws) paint job. It may not look as attractive on the Mustang which has a streamlined fairing. Dorwin may prove me wrong in 3 hours and 48 mins, though!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see :)
Examples....
Well I was thinking of this!!!
If I add invasion cowl then me not get to put shark teeth :(
Guys! I don't think its possible tonight as I just reached home, had gone to get the paint and this time had a tough time finding the Camo green! :(
Anyways, I am trying, Have to finish with the belly intake or whatever it is called ;D
Ok guys!
Paint scheme coming up in a few hours, a little bit of detailing is balanced, but that will be done in the coming days as I need a Black Marker!
Please do not laugh on this paint I chose >> I built my own Mustang, so I chose my own vivid coloring ;D
After all its a Private Mustang ;D
Ok, here are the wings below, what I have done is I have combined Aneesh's idea of the P40 and VC's idea of the Mustang P51 so stay tuned for the "Swamp Shark" soon!!
sorry!
Here she is :salute:
Kinda feeling sad that a interesting project is coming to the end! {:)} {:)}
till I create a new one!!

will meet up some time in future when i am in Goa
Hey, will be awesome to see a proper model.. That too the maiden flight! And I saw a couple of harvesters on the road today so I'm guessing there will be lots of flying fields soon! ;D
My Mustang and Predator awaiting their maiden in December..
Now I have still 3 months more... 8-) maybe I can start with a new project!! :giggle:
@ Subodh - I will try to make log video's, but imagine my hallat while uploading those hour long videos 8-)
and yes! you are welcome to Goa anytime man, if I m there in Goa, along with the clan we can go out flying sometimes, in my absence, there is still medicineman, prateek and RC..
@dotor bab - So we will be getting ample space to fly around eh ?
looking forward to our meet...

there's one thing I goofed up on, I installed the servos for the tail fin and the elevator on top!
Initially, I had designed them to sit inside the fuse itself, the response was not too good so without thinking, melted out the fuselage from outside :(
any pics of the destruction?
haha! arre nothing got destroyed, m talkin bout the mustang's servo placement re baba.
You've pulled off a real beauty here. In a way, I had a sense of involvement in this project. You are right, I'm going to miss this build thread. It was something that I used to look forward to every day.

looking forward to build a EDF next, just waiting and searching for plans, I like the F15, remember you sent me a huge F15 plan? I want to make that one, but want to convert it to EDF :( hard job on that one..If you happen to have any EDF plans please send me some :)

Hey you have done an awesome job. :) Cheers! Looks like you bought it :D
hahaha...thank you Rajath! its all because of people on RCI
actually when I posted the pics, I too thought it looked like the HBK ones...;D
Bravo!
This is one of the best builds ever in this forum.. cheers!
By any chance, did you replace the tail surfaces? They look thinner than the previous pics

I thought you'd never ask Ismail!
Yes! I took your advice on the tails and changed it the same day!
Looks better now and thinner too!
what say?

Ya.. looks a better... I am sure she would fly well. Just remember to have good airspeed while take off and landing.

Noted Sir
In the meantime, I will start with another jet, this time am thinking of a EDF, as I have one EDF with me, but there's a problem, theres no number, no ident. sticker on the motor. :(
How do I know the Wattage of the motor? a watt meter?
Jeez! no one answered my previous question :(
I suppose this thread is fading in time...
One of the simplest and rough method of measuring the KV is like this:
1, Run the motor at a known (low) voltage. Say around 6 - 7V. (You need a multimeter)
2, Measure the RPM of the motor. (You need a tacho)
As you know, KV of a motor is nothing but RPM/Volt.. You know both the voltage and the RPM of the motor.. so, it should be fairly straight forward to calculate the KV. Note that this is NOT the accurate method but should be fine for our RC use.

Wow!
I will try that Ismail!
Thanks a ton!!
Oooohh..hold on. I just missed something.
The RPM should be measured at NO load..meaning no prop. This is dangerous (at 6V) and may burn out the motor, unless you are using very low voltage at around 1 - 2V.. I am not sure if the ESC will power up in that voltage range.. So, I guess you are back to square one.
I am sure someone might know to do it.
If I were you, I would do the RPM measurement with a low pitch prop and use a margin of 20% - 30% on the measured RPM... in any case the whole experiment is just an approximation.
-Ismail
Haha! Ismail, don't worry, i wont try that so soon, as of now am preparing my DIY simulator cable and about the motor, well I will be constructing a F35 scratch ofcourse, using a EDF this time
Cheers!!!
hi guys found this awesome beautiful video of real p51
http://vimeo.com/7743200
hope you all like it
That was... I can't find a better word than... "peotic" !
Wow, the video is really awesome. {:)}
Wow, Toooo Good
thanks ppl love this plane P-51 Mustang alot :)
How could I miss this thread... I am not sure how I did that but today I went from first post to last... really amazing work bro... and very nice video to finish it. Anyone noticed the "Swastik" sign at 3:35 on one of the beauty?
Hey Vikas!
Good to know that you went through this thread..actually this thread ran for quiet a long time and was noticed by most of the guys..
Anyways, will be starting with a new scratch build soon..and will start a similar thread
