Post by: sharlock on October 08, 2010, 05:06:05 PM
Hi all,

I have designed a foamy Yak 55. I will start building the model & will share with you my progress till the flight... ;D the plane is designed slightly bigger than the normal foamies it has wingspan of 38 inches.. i wanted slightly bigger as its easy to fly outdoors in wind.

Coming up nicely

What glue are you using ?  And what is the thickness of the foam ?  Planning for any reinforcements ?

The glue is our great Indian glue "Fevicol" great for this job & better than the expensive foam safe that i have used in the past. The foam is 6mm thick, I will be using carbon fiber rod for reinforcements in the wing.

Plain old white color Fevicol used for wood work etc ?  Fevicol has many many types now, hence the question.

I use the Fevicol "MR" white adhesive works the best...

Wings & tails feathers before joining. I need to bevel the control surface end so i can get the max throw for 3D flying.

For the paint scheme for this plane i am planning to go for red & yellow with black chex.. on the wing tips

Here is the wing attached & reinforced with a 2mm carbon fiber rod this will be enough to strengthen the wing.

It appears that the motor is way too small for this size. I recommend you put this.

and a 8040 GWS prop.

I will be experimenting with different motors. Lets see how it performs

here is the trim scheme for the plane before painting. I will start the painting the model with black chex on the nose & the wing tips

Finally painted mostly complete, only tail plane & bottom of the plane needs to be painted. I made a mistake by making a slot for the rudder servo in the very front of the fuselage actually i was planning to use a pull-pull system but later changes my mind. I will install the rudder servo in a normal push rod style near the tail.

Hey,

What colors are you using to paint this as it doesn't look that it's being airbrushed

Thanks

I used fevicryl acrylic paint to paint this model. I have a airbrush but did not use it.

The acrylic color should work fine on your coro best results will be if you airbrush it, as the paint is thick & leaves brush marks on it.

Good One. Nice Color Scheme... Is this Fevicryl ? with normal paint brush?

It looks that the motor is a bit small for this. You may be able to fly it, but I dont think it would be good for 3D. Post the updates.

Lets see how it flies I have other motors also will try that if needed. I will fly precession aerobatics on this plane & later 3D..

The colors used for this model is Fevicryl "Acrylic". I used brush to paint this model. Before i start painting i drew the design scheme on the model with a marker & then started the paint process, see the model before painting you will see the markings on it. The time consuming part is painting chex.. but in the end the model looks great with the chex

Once you have the markings done on the model the paint job becomes very easy. I have a spray pen will use it on the next models i will build... I have many different crazy looking paint schemes in my mind. Hope this helps. ;D

Indeed a neat job done. !!!

Thanks for the information. Did you use the masking tape for the chex ?
Title: Re: Yak 55 build
Post by: sharlock on October 13, 2010, 04:43:51 PM

Thanks..

No masking tapes used for the chex. I first paint the yellow & later the black using the guide lines drawn before paint but requires patience for this job

Thanks & yes right you need a steady hand for this job a mistake will ruin the look.

some time back i used to fly at Mahalakshmi but thats far & to fly a foamy all you need is a park. We have a ground near by my place at Andheri were i mostly fly.

There is a small ground near Lokhandwala were i fly, not a big ground but i can fly a foamy there, sorry but outsiders are not allowed its a society play ground.  There are hardly any fields left to fly a rc planes

Hi Ankur,

You know what... I cross this ground every time I go to Airoli. This is on Mahakali Caves Road which is just behind my house. (Maybe a 5 min drive) Last time, while coming back after flying, I was wondering if I could get a sneek peak into this ground. Now I know where you guys fly. Also, both of you are invited to my place to check out my hanger anytime. It would be great to have such a field soo close by. :) I am glad to see this.

Cheers !!!
