Hello guys,

I have recently procured uBlox 6M GPS for my APM 2.6, when i got the shipment i thought it will have some kind "Front arrow" mark on GPS board. (Please refer to 3DR GPS image attached)

What i got is basic naked GPS with two connecting wires. APM 2.6 doesnt have on board compass hence i have bought this NEO 6M GPS which is also equipped with Compass. (Correct me if i m wrong) Ref: Please see my other naked GPS picture

My question is should i really bother about the direction of GPS while installing on my multi-rotor or any direction will do?

Thanks.

Gps doesnt need to be installed in any specific orientation, but compass needs to be as far as I know. Can you post a pic of the other side of your module or a link. Neo 6m is available with or without compass and there are many versions/manufacturers.

Thank you for the reply, here are the few pictures. I was confirmed by the seller before purchasing this GPS about the compass. Could you please clarify by looking at the picture.

BTW i connected this with my APM 2.6 and i could had a GPS lock, attaching few pictures for the reference.

Okay, havent used that one before, but it looks like it does have compass on it.
Anyways ask your seller or probably Satyagupta (quadkopters.com) can help because he to sells the same module.

Meanwhile I have attached a pic, which I think is the orientation(not sure). You can try that and complete compass calibration in mission planner and then check it in mission planner whether its showing correct direction by comparing it with another compass (smartphones have compass on them and free apps are available.)

And something to read about connections and wiring http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2065386

Hi All, this is specifically posted as a response ot the "Reply # 3" and the GPS with Compass module posted in that reply.

I procured this module from "Quadcopters" in Mumbai (Satyagupta) and it did not come with any documentation. So the way I configured it is the "GREEN" LED is in the RIGHT HAND BOTTOM Corner (when viewed from above or Top) and in the  Initial Setting of APM "APM with 3DR GPS/Compass" I set the YAW to 180. This works for me and it is showing the right headings i.e. East, West, North, South.

If you are using any other controller / Mission controller; you may have a similar setting in the Mission Planner. Please note; if you set the "APM with 3DR GPS/Compass" to NONE; the Compass just does not work.

I hope this helps the original poster or anyone who is using the GPS/Compass module mentioned in Reply #1 or #3.

The pic posted by sidewinder is correct. I'm using one on my quad. If you are using it on apm then set compass rotation roll to "0" (compass is on the top)

Hi Phanivyas,

Thank you for the information. Now I know there are more than one ways to configure this GPS/Compass.

Cheers!

thanks a lot SideWinder for the image. you made my day... :hatsoff:
My first ever QUAD buildup was nice and without any major problem.. also had successful first flight after some 2-3 minor crash BUT the actual problem was QUAD stability for FPV... i had same toilet bowl and aggressive behavior problem. i suspect same compass Orientation issue but couldn't find right info anywhere in UBlox documents and in other forums... at last got solution with this post on RCI..

i believe searching within forums would help you more then creating new Topic for small issues. ;) :salute:

THANKS A LOT RCI

ps. SideWinder i would like to give you "Reputation" but couldn't due to my post limitations.

Easy way, is to check the orientation of the mag chip on your FC and accordingly position your module. I have been doing the same thing, and that is how I suggested the direction earlier, moreover I also happened to use the same module in similar orientation so it works.

Orientation would change if you change the direction of the module(roll/yaw), so yes there would always be more ways to set it up depending on you built/frame.

100% correct, but I just wished if everyone thought similarly.

I have both GPS neo 6 and 7. Perfectly running

The 2.5.2 does not have inbuilt compass. Try recalibrating the board.
