Carbon rods may be cheap at HK, but shipping is a killer. Carbon rods are shipped from HK only through EMS. :(
Cheers !!!

If the required length is only 30 to 40 cm you can use Barbecue (BBQ) sticks. We get 3 mm 40 cm and 5 mm 50 cm long.

Hi All,
i have not use carbon fiber rods yet, but i too need some 3mm rods to reinforce my blu baby wings. i know the alternate can be bamboo sticks. have any one tried soft broom stick or cracker rocket stick ( stick the comes with cracker). can this be an alternate for carbon fiber rods. i'm not sure about the strength.

I don't have much idea on aeromodelling or CF rods, but these days I find a lot of new products like square plastic beadings (used in plywood funiture). Square beading ( hollow & solid) of all sizes like 6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 12mm. A 6mm sq. pipe weighs as light as bamboo stick of the same span.  A 12 feet sq. pipe (6mm) costs Rs. 15/-

Does anyone know if 1mm  rod could be sanded down to  0.8 or 0.5.mm

no idea about sanding ... but carbon dust is hazardous .. put a cloth (wet) over your face while sanding.

also the core of optical fiber cables (some ) is very high quality and thin fiber glass rod . you can get it free if you look around.
