Title: DIY: Drill Press
Post by: girishsarwal on December 26, 2012, 11:48:47 AM
So I got moved by this thread (thanks @sanjayrai for incepting the keera)

http://www.rcindia.org/tools-materials-and-building-techniques/boring-a-prop-id/

and since I am always in a need to drill precise holes in PCB's, I ended up gifting myself a home made drill press for the season. Here are some pics. All I need to add now is a spring (probably from a cycle stand), a lever (or a threaded rod based linear rail for moving the drill up and down) some margin to cover the edges, and a dab of paint ;)

GOOD idea! Your limitation though is the Dremel. You are restricted to 3 mm dia. Why not go the whole hog, and mount a 10 mm Hand Drill m/c?

What have you used as the Rail Guide? It should not allow lateral movement.

Great & innovative idea!

Thanks @sanjayrai; the way I've done it is the hose clamps can be extended/replaced by larger ones to hold bigger spindles. And since they're screwed in to the backplate, movements are restricted. The rail's used is 10" ball bearing telescopic channel for drawers; designed for almost zero lateral movement. having a Dremel gives me a better idea of the accuracy I can achieve. It's pretty good at the moment to drill 0.5mm PCB holes. So I'm pretty confident it will fair well with larger items. If you come over to NCR sometime soon, and need to bore another hole on a prop, this thing is all yours ;)

Aditya, there are literally hundreds available. Just go to e-bay, and you will see from cheap China to high-end Bosch

Yups, so many of them available. I personally use a Black and Decker orange colored one. As of now its been performing well, Has CW and CCW rotation so I double it up as a screwdriver and also has a hammer function for concrete walls (when you want to hang that airplane or that painting). Torque is great and what I really like is the speed control built into the trigger, so the harder one presses, the faster it goes; unlike the rpm dial on some other ones. I bought it for 1200/-

Thanks @samlikespad, although the idea is not strictly mine, I referred a couple of designs online to do this, although many used aluminium angles and bearings for the rail, so I had to improvise somewhere. Another improvisation that I'm going to do is mount a light in the inner column and cover the top so the area being drilled is well lit up. Infact, this was also a test design for the rails for a much meaner thing coming up...any guesses? ;)

Well, meaner is the key word....  have no clue..  ??? could be anything like a foam cutter, Jet plane launcher etc. etc.  ;D

A X-Y-Z Table below the Drill, so if you use an End Mill Cutter instead of a drill bit you have a milling machine?

Thanks all
I drew up some plans for those who want to do it the engineering way.
Hope that helps.

Update:

I attached the cycle stand springs to the Drill Press and boom, they were stretched beyond limits and deformed with the first go; the springs were made of thick ms so I should've expected a high spring constant; I needed something slingy. Anyhow, they're history so I've now replaced the springs with old tyre tube acting as a rubber band and bingo, it seems to work great. Even if it breaks, its fixable in like 5 mins and the best part is I can adjust the tension by varying the thickness of the band. Also put in a light; Video coming up in just a little time; Need to get hold of that CPVC pipe for a lever.
