Recently i have found a great shop with a great stock of EPE and EPS foams in kolkata chandni market area. the name of the shop is Y.M. Rajbhai. I have purchased an EPE sheet of 1.5 inch thickness and 6ft by 5ft area. it is strong enough to built an RC Plane but unbreakable . the price of the sheet is Rs 675.
if anybody wants EPS its price is  about Rs 400. it is actually green foam.
The address of the shop is
                      Y.M. Rajbhai
                       Brabourne Court,
                      Block B, Opposite HDFC Bank,
                      1, Chandni Chawk Street
                      Kolkata-700072
                 Mobile: 9874343000

I would like to thanks Mr Kalyan Pradhan. He first gave me the address of Supreme Petrochems . recently they do not sale this type of foams in small scale.but they gave me the address of that shop and from there i got the required foam.

hmm ... just happens I am in Kolkata today ....

did you buy any ? can you post a pic ?

Yes i have bought a sheet of 1.5'' thick , 6ft by 5ft in area.I will post the photographs at night today.

Looks like YM Rajbhai has recently started selling the green foam. I had visited that shop a number of times in the past couple of years and they specifically told that they do not stock any such foam.

Supreme Petrochem, on the other hand, is a manufacturer and, as you mentioned, they do not sell foam in small quantities. However, I have always managed to convince them and have bought foam sheets(quantity 1 or 2) multiple times.

I was in Kolkata a few days back. I visited Rajakatra... I don't remember the place exactly and also johnson or jackson street for getting some foam.. Didn't got anything much suitable. I wish could have known this shop that moment...

sorry to inform you boss - that foam cannot be used for model aircraft

VC .... could you chime in pls .... you know your foams

I have a meeting today in the Dalhousie area --- lets see if I can visit that shop

This foam is mostly used for packing and it makes good cushion for battery packs, Fuel tank, RX inside the model aircraft.

well m not a expert at scratch building...

but if you add CF rods n tubes for stiffness, you can make a model out of this foam.

that way  you can make a plane out of newspaper also

I went to Y.Rajbhai shop today ... sadly ... the guy has no foam suitable
for model aircraft. Yes he has some thick thermacole and the insulation/packaging
type foam that Avigyan posted but alas none suited for the foam brigade.

As I said, I had visited that shop multiple times and had never found any suitable foam there, in fact, I was surprised by this thread. The only place where you can get styrofoam/green foam/XPS board in kolkata in Supreme Petrochem. And if you can convince them, they will sell in small quantities. Of course, the most hassle free way is to use coro which is widely available and extremely cheap compared to supreme's styrofoam.

I have seen Rc planes made up with these foams in this linkhttp://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attachmentNew.php?attachmentid=403692
it is true that a complete set cannot be made with these foam, because it is not too hard like EPP or EPS. but we can make the fuselage with this foam to make the plane crash-proof and we can use coroplast for the wing.

Sadly, the only way that I can think of using this foam is to sandwich it in balsa / light ply and create a block fuselage. Any other exercise is not worth my time. I have tons of this stuff purloined from rag pickers (3 years ago) and I'm about to return it to them.

see covering foam with fiber cloth for strength.... on youtube...

Foam is not that bad.... merely covering with brown paper & Fevicol (50/50) gives it enough strength to fly and enjoy with spending <30% cost of so called crash resistant EPP foam.

foamybuilder

Why dont these people get EPP. Such a big country  and no one manufactures EPP :(

v2 eagle

Saurab ji,

I tried your method of fevicol lamination also. the problem is that i get different types of under camber in my flat airfoil wing in different season of the year for the same plane. it bends and twists like anything that you may not get the same plane every month. but still its worth the effort. if people cannot get this they can try normal stationary thermocole+Fevicol+tissue paper lamination. cheaper & lighter but time consuming.

you have to dry it in shade .... slow drying as the dryng happens the paper shrinks and cause twist and warps .....

so have a spar installed first then paper coat and leave it to dry in shade.

avigyan.chatterjee

Saurabh
it is true , slow drying is much better than drying in direct sun light.I have already experienced it in different times that drying foam with fevicol in direct sunlight bent the foam.
           thanks for your information sourabh.

v2 eagle

Its not about drying the foam, lets say if i fly the completely dried plane in a winter day at the moment of landing i feel it a little sloppy and seems to absorb lot of moisture and become wet.
