Hi All, I am new to RC.. I am making own hot wire foam cutter. Recently bought a nichrome wire from ebay. I have connected to a DC adaptor. The rating 12v and 1200ma. Its not getting heat. I have seen some videos where DIY cutter connected to 9v battery working great..Please help

Choose high rate amps such as 4amps and try it.

Tell me what is the resistance/ meter, and length of wire used. I recently made my foam cutter with 26 SWG nichrome wire (6 ohm/m) with 700mm length. I supplied through Turnigy Reactor 250 at around 50W (15V DC & 3.2 A) through it.

For the same length I supplied using 12V 2 A supply, but it does not work. As said above, if you supply more than 4A, you can do. If you need power supply grab an old SMPS and make your own power  supply. Generally SMPS will supply 12 V and 10A to 18A power.

I used 18cm length approximately..The nichrome wire detail is "http://www.ebay.in/itm/Nichrome-wire-For-Hot-wire-Foam-cutting-6-Meters-25-Gauge-SWG-High-Quality-/122079876630?".

I understand it will work if the current is increased..but i saw few DIY videos where they use 12 V and 1 to 2 mah current to make it work..some it is just with 2 AA batteries..Not sure where it is wrong?

There is no detail about the resistance I think. It may be around 5 ohm/m I think.

Battery is different from adapter power supply. Adapter power supply has inherent safety features which will cut off during short circuit. Connecting two ends of nichrome wire to adapter is like short circuit. I have faced the same with my adapter.

If you use battery, it will supply the power directly and hence its getting heated up. Try with a Lead acid battery, it will definitely work. Donot use lipo battery directly to hot wire as lipo are unsafe for this kind of activities. Better connect a BRUSHED ESC to lipo, connect a serve tester (potentiometer) to ESC and vary the voltage to get desire power. Do not forgot to use the voltage checker as the lipo voltage should not fall below 2.5V per cell.

Else use a transformer (240 to 12v) and connect it to dimmer (fan regulator) and vary the output voltage. This will vary the power to nichrome wire.

You have mentioned 12V 1 to 2mah which is typo error. Its actually 1 to 2 ah or 1000 to 2000 mah.

I have two options for foam cutting.

1. Using Turnigy Reactor 250W charger
2. 30A brushed ESC

Both were power by ATX power supply. You can try any of the above.

I am not aware about the resistance details. The current rating is 1000mah to 2000mah...And I am naive to RC. I do not know ATX power supply, brushed ESC and Turnigy reactor. I have even tried with 3CM length Nichrome wire connected to a 9V battery and that didnt work. May be I have to try with a SMPS..

Hi All..I tired with a SMPS...Its working great...Is there a way to reduce the flow of current(say from 20Amps to 3 or 4 Amps) without changing the voltage?
