All respected Members.. i am engaged in a new project mission is to accomplish an air ship flying model.. for this i am willing to fill it with Helium, than that of Hydrogen.. can anyone tell me the way to get Helium Gas..? please.. any adivice.. :help:

Roopeshji,
             Why dont try the local gas baloon guy...... Children will surely know about him.

Balloon sellers use Acetylene - extremely flammable. Helium is inert and can be bought in cylinders. I had planned on the same project - a Zeppelin airship. However, after hearing the price of helium cylinders in Guwahati, I abandoned the project.

Helium cylinders - Rs.11,000/-

Hydrogen cylinders - Rs.6,500/-  :banghead:

@VC Sir
Is that price for a whole cylinder?

@roopesh sir-
How much do u want? i think i have an idea
I'll be back.

VC

Yes. One has to buy the entire cylinder.

VC Sir, will you tell me once, about the quantity of the gas, in those cylinders..? please.. my craft will be 1.4 meter long and 11 inch in dia..
Phoenix.........

SunLikeStar

You need ~14.14 cubic feet to fill the craft once and the first cylinder that VC posted is of 14.9 cubic feet of helium :)

VC

Unless the airship is completely airtight, the helium will leak. Eventually, all of it will escape. Thus we are talking about an expense of Rs.10,000/- every time you want to fly. Not feasible for me, in India.

Sir is there any alternate as inexpensive, or resaonably expensive..? please..

Ujjwaana Sir, a million thanks for the link.. and sorry for the delay in response as was working on some serious projects on models.. the conversation is going on.. with them..  :salute:

not sure, but please check at the supplier who supplies different gas for Medical use and Gas Welding use.

My Helium / Hydrogen cylinder rates were quoted from Advertisement balloon suppliers.

guru - I think we are going to manufacture CO2 and NOT Helium here.CO2 is heavier than air. While the balloon may inflate, it certainly will NOT float.

Vinegar/acetic acid: CH3COOH and Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate: NaHCO3

When you mix the two chemicals, you get:

CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ---> CH3COONa + H2CO3

H2CO3 is carbonic acid which will later decompose and form carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O):

H2CO3 ---> H2O + CO2

To put it simply:

CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ---> CH3COONa + H2O + CO2

Anything filled with CO2 will NOT float.

Sorry to burst the balloon! >:D

sorry, i am not a chemical expert nor that much strong in chemistry now, just googled for it, and showed a link which i feel helpful!!
all the best!!

VC Sir.. still waiting to conduct the expiriment once.. but here all shops are closed due to harthal, due to political issues.. so, waiting for some baking soda.. but hope , from your explanation it may turn in to fun..  :giggle: anyway we can go for a try..

Roopesh, I have an idea.

Make the airship frame and cover it with the lightest possible black material. Make it airtight. The build has to be featherweight. That having been achieved, now we have 2 options:

A. Put it out in strong sunlight and see if the air inside heats up enough to create lift.

B. Place a low voltage Peltier plate on the airship with the cooling surface outside and the heating surface inside the airship. Connect the power supply and see if the air inside gets hot enough to generate lift.

Many years ago, when I was a student in Kolkata, I remember a guy selling 3' long black plastic sleeves on the footpaths. One end of the sleeve would be tied up and he would hold the other open end and move the entire thing back and forth rapidly, forcing air into the open ended sausage. Once it had enough air, he would seal the other end too. Now we had a black sausage lying on the footpath, exposed to strong Kolkata sunshine. After a while, it would begin to float up to the amazement of passers by and bystanders.
I recall that he used to bounce the balloon on the footpath to demonstrate its strength. Wonder what that material was........couldn't have been any space age stuff because it used to be sold for a princely Rs.5 or 10 per piece.

all Respected ones.. painstakingly working on expiriments.. but here i have to lift a good camera, with battery, and one powerpack for propultion and directional control.. whole electronics weighs about 260 grams.. great head ache..
