Which Epoxy resin to use for fiber glass or carbon fibre cloth??? Which brand is to be used and where is it available in Bangalore

Sreeraj

There is only 1 Type of Epoxy Resin which can be used for CF, GF & Kevlar. But the hardener varies for eg. low or high temp applications.
Get a 2 part epoxy resin with hardener type you need based on your application. People suggested araldite but I've had bad experience with it.
You could try Indiamart or BVK Iyengar road, JC Road.

Hello,
There are 3 main types of matrix material used for polymer composites.(Thermoset resins)

1) Epoxy Resin:
Without going into the chemistry and technicality of it, this is basically one type of resin, which contains an epoxide group hence the name. There is also something called as a hardener, which when introduced to the system, leads to a polymerisation reacion making it hard. Different epoxy resins show different curing characteristics, and these are generally provided by the manufacturer of the system. Best for your application is a room temperature curing epoxy. Hunstsman advanced materials has an extensive catalogue of epoxy's for composites.

2) Polyester Resin: This is not as strong as epoxy resins, nor does it show similar corrosion resistance. However it is extremely cheap. There are generally two grades, GP(General Purpose) and ISO(Isopthalic). Iso shows better properties. I personally hate using it as it smells extremely bad(always use good quality respirators while working with it)
For curing you have an activator like MEKP along with a catalyst.

3)Vinyl Ester Resins: This lies is in between epoxy and glass fiber. It has better corrosion resistance than polyester, but is not as strong as epoxy resins.

Theoretically composites are just a product made with 1)Fiber 2) Matrix(Resin). For best results never use carbon fiber with polyester resin. Epoxy resin shows best compatibility and wettability with carbon fiber. While using glass fiber you can opt for either of the three resins.
Polyester and Vinyl ester should be easily available in your city, as they are produced locally on a large scale. Best and cheapest option for making hobby parts would be to opt for glass fiber and polyester resins.

A brief intro about me:

I am Vishwajeet Karmarkar, part of a company called 12C Composites. We at 12C undertake custom orders for carbon fiber components. We can build a variety of parts for the hobby industry, ranging from flate plates, propellers, quadcopter frames, wings , tubes, rods, etc all out of carbon fiber. We use advanced techniques such as VARTM, which allows us to achieve excellent fiber to resin ratio, controlling weight and maintaining strength. If interested please drop us a mail at . We would love to undertake any of your needs of carbon fiber, at reasonable costs!

We also have developed a carbon fiber frame for 10 inch props. You can buy it here:http://www.flipkart.com/12c-miscellaneous-electronic-hobby-kit/p/itmegsuxgvppukbj?pid=EHKEGSUXYTA5JZGY.

We are also planning on developing smaller frames for fpv quads. We are currently planning to make 250 fpv out of carbon fiber/glass fiber. I would love to hear from you and others if you guys are interested in having such frames made locally(and cheaper than imported ones) so that we can pursue this with more enthusiasm.

@vishu14: Nice info!
Miniquad is something this hobby is moving ahead in.
It would be a good initiative if we could have some quality Miniqaud frames made within.
BTW, where are you based?
I do have quiet a few requirements just like a lot of DIYes here at RCI.
Will shoot a mail sometime.

Cheers,
Sree

Hi naveed, Since you mentioned cloth i am going to assume you dont want anything for GF mat. So for Carbon/GF cloth as long as it is hand layup or vacuum assited molding and not Resin infusion you can get Araldite Ay 105 Resin and HY 991 Hardener from zenith industrial supplies based in SP road. You should be able to get 1kg resin and hardener for about 800 bucks or so (atleast this is what i used to get it for in Delhi if i remember correctly) Once mixed you have about 30 mins before it starts to gel up. I have worked on a lot of composite projects with the same and its worked pretty well.

Hi dunder93,

Will Araldite AY105 & HY 991 hardner best suits for fiberglass application? I want to cover my foam plane with fiberglass and epoxy. I'm searching for low viscous epoxy but still I did not get. Can you suggest any low viscous epoxy for fiberglass application?

Hello,
There are various types of resin and hardener available in the market.below are the compatible chemicals for gf and cf:
GF: 1)polyester resin and hardener with accelerator to reduce the gel formation and drying time. this resin will work on both chopped fiber which is generally used for mould making and Gf cloth.
     2) epoxy resin and hardener.
CF: 1) epoxy resin and hardener only.

above both types of resin comes with varying gel formation time and pot life so see the specs of materials before using it.

you can procure any composite material from hindoostan composite solution, mumbai. they have a good repo over composite products in India.
Heres the website:  http://www.hindoostantech.com/

We as a team used to develop the complete set of UAVs using various materials like kevlar, carbon fiber, hybrid fiber and glass fiber for the international SAE Aero design competition so having the bit knowledge about this things.

Hii,
I have tried 'Araldite Ay 105 Resin and HY 991 Hardener' but because of its high viscosity you wont be able to apply the thin coat on the cloth plus it does not seep through the cabon fiber cloths of 200gsm or more because of its inter molecular properties. for general use like repairing and denting, this kind of epoxy will work as it has a drying time of 1-2 at room temprature.

Thanks for your reply.

I was looking for any links to buy suitable resin for composite material development. I have sent my request to hindoostan composite.

harshu11

They have wide variety of composite materials and resins. Now they are into the development of prepreg material also. Good stuffs to try.
