Guys,
Sourcing WBPU is kind of difficult in Delhi. I earlier used a product from Pidilite called Showcase Aqua Satin. Last when I went to the only known retailer, they had stopped sourcing the same. I contacted Pidilite Industries and was informed that the material is not called Showcase Eco Fresh. However, still I cannot find a retailer in Delhi. Last when I contacted Pidilite, I was informed that they would arranging from Mumbai, but then I am not hopeful.

So any of you folks can help me on this?

regards

Hi Pankaj,

I checked a few shops today for Showcase Urethane plus, had the picture of the can on my phone to show them but no one had a clue. I even asked if they had any other WBPU..but still deers in headlights :banghead: I was wondering if there is some local name to WBPU  :headscratch:

Below, link to pedilite wood finish products, is there any thing else here that we can use?

So is it wood varnish that we are looking for  ???
BTW I want this stuff to try cotton cloth and WBPU covering on foam like Punkaj has done on some of his planes.

Hi SLS

Yes kind of..on pidilite's website..ecofresh comes in the category of Wood Top coats. When i visited ravivar peth there was also a product "water based wood varnish" but it is white in color and clears after drying. I tried this on fiberglass but it is useless for us.

Just a week back i tried following covering methods on foam :

1) Epoxy+hardner
2) Epoxy+hardner+fiberglass cloth
3) Epoxy+hardner+wood varnish+fiberglass cloth
4) Epoxy+hardner+talc
5) Epoxy+hardner+talc+fiberglass cloth

Process 4 made the surface smooth and shiny..adds strength too but adds considerable weight.
Process 2 added srength but less weight than process 4 also less shine than 4.
Process 5,3 and 1 were failures.

I have fiberglass cloth with me..do let me know if you need it for testing. You can also use epoxy+hardner mixed with alcohol and apply on cloth.

Great.. but want to try the cotton cloth (dhoti) technique :) don't want to get into epoxy and glass right now.

OK Folks, trying something different for the Edge. Will post the pictures after covering with paint, but as of now, trying with POP.
I have come across something called "spackle" in lot of forums. Did a google and came to know that it is compound used to seal Gypsum boards in artificial roofing. Now, locally, gypsum compound is available in 5kg bags, so it did not make sense. Decided to use Plaster of Paris - used in finishing walls. It will add weight, but a thin layer may not add too much.

So here's what I am trying....

First the dhoti covering :-) with diluted fevicol.  Method of applying first on the foam then spread the cloth and apply on the top surface while stretching....

Next mixed POP with lot of water so that it becomes as free flowing as fevicol normally is. Then apply this mixture  on the cloth with a brush. The thin paste would ensure that the layer is not thick. Allow the surface to dry over 2-3 days and then polish with first 200 grit paper, then with 400 and finally with 600..

The 400 & 600 paper finish is pending. Once done I shall apply paint and then see the result.

Had a conversation with a pidilite executive..the Showcase Aqua Satin product is now manufactured only when there is a request for it and not mass produced. The exec. was also talking about the alternative product Eco Fresh series. He will be sending a tech spec sheet to me for the Eco fresh product. Will update as I get it.

@pankaj

Have you tried epoxy with talc as filler..it gives a good surface finish + gloss but has to be used cautiously to prevent too much weight addition...let us know the POP experiment result :)

Why not get Hobbico Balsa Filler right away ? Getting 3 nos costs just $21 including shipping.

Many think that ordering from Tower Hobbies is costly (price + Shipment), but I find them mroe VFM (if you are brand concious) than any other Online shop , even Hobby King!

Tests with different building materials for finishing.

Actually this is turning out interesting

1. POP and sanding ... applied on the thermocol, becomes rock solid. Sanding leaves marks. Applying on the cloth covering, is good. Also a coat of fevicol seals some gaps.
Medium weight addition

2. Water soluble primer (for arcylic wall paints). Apply thinned with water 2:1 allow to dry and sand lightly with 400 grit paper - good finish. Lower weight addition than pop but unable to fill cracks.
