I want to build an rc plane by using normal thermocole. please help me.
Hi, we had build some planes from (Thermocole, Not because we love thermocole but for the scarcity of other materials ) we used the most compressed thermocole we could find eg. a box used for packing fish (ice box ?) other packing thermos are not good.
Believe me we could not find a good compressed thermo sheet here.
The good thing about Thermocole is that it is very light, easy to cut and join, we use Fevicole and rapid glue for joining which are easily available.
Covers, again which is Not available anywhere here, we use Paper sometimes glossy papers, which makes the thermocole strong.
Not to forget, we are cutting the wings from the Thermo too, but reinforce it with some small stick, just to make sure its strong.
Paint it or sticker it. :-)
here is one of them :
Very nice build zonuna {:)} is the fuse hollow or is it made from block of foam ???
Thanks SunLikeStar, The Fuse is hollow, Thermo is cut into a sheet, use just like you would with balsa.
simply awesome.... not enough words to express the finish..

Do post a build log next time you build something like this. And you deserve some reputation man. Rep++ :bow:
ps: what is that V-tail on the wall, in the first pic?
Awesome..This is for sure one of the best build..Congrats..
awsome build......
can you tell me setup for the nicrome cutter(heating wire )
how much volt and how much current to pass....
Bravo! North East rocks!!! :thumbsup:
When am I going to Aizawl? ???

Rep ++ I agree 100% - Sunlikestar, click on the blue heart on Zonuna's Tag (left hand side) and click on () I agree and post a comment. I just did and his rep has gone up by one.
The V Tail on the wall in the first pic (unless I am very mistaken) is this. I have the same.

Thats a plane bought from ebay long time back, kind of twin star, simple motor controlled plane
Thanks guys, thanks VC I am overjoy..
No Zonuna, WE are overjoyed that someone has produced such a beautiful model from a fish box thermocole. Well done!
Here is my thermocol model.
Very easy to build.

I am amazed to see a thermacol built plane with a 40 size engine... :bow:....is it strong enough to hold the roaring beast ? I am talking about the vibrations!!!! is it Reinforced with some covering or paint or cloth ?
OMG!!! Can't believe that this is made out of thermocol. Wow!!! Superb, truly awesome.
Zonuna,
Very neat and clean build.... Wonder what material you used for the tail feathers and the control surfaces.

We are using a normal heater wire about 1meter long using 12v AC sometimes DC, we also adjust the heat according to our needs by steeping up a voltage
Thats a nice plane, see what I mean by a good compressed thermocol, your fuse seemed like a lose pack thermo, if only we could have a good quality thermo to buy..

To my surprise, the plane is very very strong, even without a reinforce, But we reinforced the wings with a small piece of sticks, the firewall is a piece of plywood, The whole plane is covered with paper by using fevicol, some of our models are Not covered but paint.

For Tail and control surface are all THERMOCOL covered with paper + Fevicol.
I`ll try to post a video of the Thermocol plane flying, This particular plane has been flying since 2009. watch out for video
Wow Wow Amazing build Zonuna. Yep this is the first time I have seen a thermocol plane with Glow Engine that too size 0.49. Please share your paper and Fevicol Method. Never tried this one before always used clear tape, sealing iron and carbon reinforcements.
Have loads of high density thermocol waiting to be hot wired and shaped. The finish you have achieved is really inspiring way to go :thumbsup:
You deserve a rep+++
Thank you Sir,
Paper + Fevicol = really simple, Smoothed the thermo, apply Fevi on both then paste it :-) we usually use a thicker paper like glossy to make a wrinkle free. I cannot use clear cello with Fevicol as drying is a problem.
I am pretty impressed!..
I have seen using thermocol + tissue paper + diluted fevicol in a TV program for kids (Art attack).. In fact they also showed how to make models/molds using news paper crushed and held in shape with cellotape. They then used tissue paper + dilute fevicol to reinder a smooth surface over it. Finally, they painted after its dry. I thought using this method will be too fragile for an RC plane... but from your build I can see its worth giving a try.
One more question.. How do you reinforce your landing gear area? I always have tough time with my landing gears. Thermocol would not sustain high stress.. curious to know how you managed it.

zonuna you forgot to mention the smaller version with the asp 21,also built with thermocoal.Anyways heres the pic on your behalf
heres the 46 size thermocoal built flying

The cockpit area is reinforce Inside with Balsa or plywood then Landing gear area is again reinforce outside with Plywood.
Here is a video of some Thermocol Glow plane from Mizoram ;D

Nice video {:)}
thank you
Great build man... {:)} :salute: :bow: Nice video too. :thumbsup:
Did I say ..... Lovely???
I am surprise !!! and so happy that RC friends appreciate and support our work, we need to learn so much more from you, Long live RCindia.org {:)}
how could you install an engine in a themocol model. According to me the thermocol will melt due to the engine's heat.

Hi, Manu
The engine is mounted well out of thermocol, the cockpit area and the firewall is reinforce inside with plywood/balsa, engine mounting is being mount on the firewall, please see the photo, I do not have a closeup view, but this might give you an idea.
wonderful awesome.u deserve a great applause .. good work. will u accept me as a student if yes please tell me the step by step procedure for this plane.. i will try to make it......
@zonuna
Very great build I was searching airplane build from packing thermocol and what I see glow engine on full size airplane build from thermocol
Amazing
:bow:
Zonuna.... that's a wonderful looking model...
Best Wishes.
Thanks wingmanbunty and shobhit17
The model you see on the video was build 5 years back and is still flying today, the scarcity of materials like balsa and other light materials forces us to use Thermocol but normal packing thermos are too loose so we end up on using a Thermo use for packing Fish (Fish box ... ).
Nowadays nearly all scratch build plane amongst us electric or glow (our rc Association aka. Mizoram Aeromodellers Association .(MAA) are build using thermocole
I am sharing out latest Highwing Thermo project called BIG MAA powered by 57cc DLE Gas
please visit our FB page https://www.facebook.com/groups/136947296318616/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/136947296318616/)
Excellent models and too from foam... Just too good.. The whole forum would be benefited if you could post a build log and details of re-enforcements and covering used..
Regards
Great Models Zonuna.........
@zonuna
I was searching internet for rc thermocol model this afternoon, I find two people working on thrmocol I visit the link and what i found is glow engine fitted aeromodel
Now what a craftsmanship it is, I even do not dream that thermocol can be use to this level
That Is very inspirational work I found today
All I can say is :hatsoff: to your work.
What beautiful models Zonuna! :hatsoff:
How's your Tiger Moth? When do you get time to fly it with these Juicy Lucys dying to jump into the air?
Zonuna - Wow !!
Beautiful.....
@zonuna sir,
Beautiful. Just look at the windows!
How did you make that neat fillet at the undercarriage/fuselage joint?
And what is that bump a few inches ahead of the starboard u/c leg? Fuel overflow drain?
Lovely airfield too.
Regards.
woaa ... Friends not so fast .. I am posting this on behalf of our RC Association MAA I myself is one of the worse builder, and this so call Big MAA was in fact build by one of our senior member, all helps and suggestions are welcome
now a day doing some research on packing thromocol build just want to know if possible what this hot iron press is doing at this working area
is it used for the finishing the surface or for some bending twisting ..... :headscratch:
It's used to close the cells... Which are left open after sanding...
We sometimes use it for drying up glue (fevicol) after covering
Thanks zonuna,doc. for :help:
I too trying to make a v22 osprey fro thermocol
