I was stuck in the field with a busted prop and no balancer. So I used a simple screwdriver. It was just a fraction smaller than the shaft the prop sat on so I did a rough and ready balance using medical tape from the first aid kit I carry. Blendorn I think it's called.

Within 5 minutes I was back flying and didn't detect any out of balance vibrations. When I got home I thought I'd better do it correctly and pulled the balancer out. A complete waste of time, it didn't need re-balancing. Possibly a fluke, but it did the job. It just goes to prove that sometimes you don't have to spend money to get the job done.

Try it yourselves. Next time you want to balance a prop, try it with the screwdriver and then try it with the balancer and see how far out you were. One other tip, don't bother getting all up tight about getting it absolutely perfect. With props, perfection rarely happens.

One big factor most people don't take into account is the stray breeze from an open window, a fan or air conditioning. If it's steady, no matter how small it can affect your balancing.   ...   Stu

A major factor here, often forgotten, is only static balancing is being done. As the Prop is rotating, ideally it needs dynamic balancing. A Statically balanced prop is not necessarily Dynamically balanced!

Please let's not complicate things any more than they are. Dynamic balancing is more for the, ......  shall we say pedantic. (to be kind) I've never "Dynamically balanced" anything in the past 66  years and I've never had a prop cause any problems yet. Then again, perhaps you could explain how a hobbyist would carry out such a task, easily and economically of course. Whilst doing that perhaps you could explain what advantages this gives the average hobbyist. Perhaps I've just been extra lucky to have lasted so long without anything being shaken to death on it's maiden flight.

while it does not go the whole hog ....
yes it does work - and yes it is superior to normal balancing.

3 axis acclerometer data of the prop under load before and after balancing will show it.

this is just one method ... there are other ways too

For years i used to balance my props like in pic 1. (Horizontally)
Only recently i learnt that props need to be balanced as in pic 2 too.(Vertically)
Now i learn a way to balance props dynamically.

"Pedantic" - excessively concerned with minor details or rules; overscrupulous.

In India we have an alternative to 'pedantic'.
It's called 'Chalta hai' or 'Let it be'
It works. Mostly.
But literally it means 'pedestrian'

Perhaps pedantic is good for progress...

usually I use Flight controller(APM) to monitor vibrations(http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/ac_measuringvibration/) via telemetry and balance each props like the method saikat sir posted above
