I am looking for very high torque (with planetary gearbox) dc motors which can operate in the 12v range. Budget is around INR3000. Willing to stretch budget for better motors.
Thanks!

Go to Chandni back (wallington area) where Xerox, printers and other damaged machines are broken into pieces and motors, plastics are separated for separate sell. You will got them. Even you can make separate gear assembly using laserjet cartridge gears and feed with 300 size motor (40/-). Readymade cast iron/brass gear assembly you can get near ghungra patty of Burrabazar that is used for door opening or shutter opening. Feed them with large motor operated with 12 volt.

If still more power required, contact Collapsible Bridge (Nazrul Setu at Khiderpore dock) makers. They manufacturer large powered Gear and motor mechanism that opens the complete 4 lane bridge from 2 side and Ship passes between them. But definitely not Rs.3000/- budget and with 12 volt.  ;D

You did not mention about torque and rpm required, & if a normal gear motor can do the job why to go for a planetary gear box motor ?
anyways this is a link:

Almost every electric Screwdriver uses planetary mechanism to reduce the rpm(increase torque).try to look for not working one they will be cheap if you need just the gears.

Thank you for the replies. Was sleepy when I posted so forgot to mention that I am looking for very HIGH torque motors. ;D More than 40kg/cm. RPM should be more than 200. Current consumption is not an issue but nominal voltage should be around 12V.

Bump...
Anyone know of a trusted Chinese site that sells geared motors?

Don't know abt Chinese.. But i think i had seem on tamiya .. just chech their site once

lastRites

Tamiya gearboxes are not suited for the hell I will put them through(combat robotics).. :P

just tired at a local market... he said he had 15KG torque... for  :Rs: 1500 will check back again on different available.... and get back...

Thank You so much!!! :)
Can you post some pictures too please?

It seems that,
Power = Torque x Angular speed
Here power in watt = 40*9.8*.01*2*pi*200/60
= 82.1 watt
Taking gear η = 0.5, you need only 160 watt motor. ;D
A simple 2822 can even deliver more than that.
Better make proper gear from lathe and use donkey motor of HK. Plenty of power.
with 50A ESC and 12 volt Lead Acid battery. An 7AH battry will add you plenty of weight that others have to struggle to tilt your car.
Hobbysea will soon stock them (Motor 750/- + ESC 750/-) + Gear Cost

That is a very good idea indeed :) But to go brushless it would be necessary to change the whole setup of my bot. Moreover I would need a reversible brushless controller. In my opinion pmdc motors are more robust and easy to use. In combat robotics the simpler your bot is, the better. I currently use car wiper motors. Cost me 400INR a piece. But due to worm gear assembly, they are very slow and inefficient.

Has it crossed your mind to use electric starter motors for bikes/cars such as pulsar. It will be worthwhile to check how consistent can they perform under continuous load but they are pretty high torqued and have a decent RPM; I  do not know of the specs per se, but a visit to the spare part store and you could ask the guy to hook it up to a battery. I recently used one to make a starter for my engine. They do hog on current but.

Have fun real steeling! ;)

Those things are monsters. Around 150A starting current and about 50kg\cm of torque on a maruti omni motor. But No ready-made gearboxes coupled with their intermittent duty cycle design raise the unreliability of these motors and should not, in my opinion, be used for competitions. But I am still thinking of using them(not for locomotion). How much would a bike starter motor cost if bought second hand?

The bike starter motor, brand new, is about 1200/-, a local one costs about 850/- in Gurgaon.
The bike starter is not as much a monster as the car one. I use it with a 5A battery and it deals well, the load probably is lesser than what you intend it for

You asked for high torque, high speed, so I put in my 2p...

Thanks girishsarwal :) I found a website where step by step instructions are given on how to use a starter moto for robotics. It really does not meet my requirements though. :(
Robotmarketplace has some great motors but they are not responding to my emails..

checked the motors again today.....

the motor is 14KG torque and 300 RPM at 12V....

there are some pics....

lastRites, I just checked with my contact here in Delhi. He said he has some motors with >40Kg/cm torque and >200 RPM @12V. However, they are not planetary, single internal gear. Let me know if that works for you...

Cheers

Hey post a picture of your Robot...so we know when it appears in ROBOT WARS  ;D

@lastrites -I found a motor not with planetary gearbox, but single stage/2 stage reduction gearbox having 200 rpm, 40kg/cm torque @ 12 volts. still searching a motor with planetary gearbox which fits in your budget.I will PM you once I find.
12 Volt Madness....!!!

lastRites

Planetary gearbox would have been better but good spur gear assembly would work to.. Can you post some pictures of the motor(40kg/cm torque @ 12 volts)? And mention the expected price too? Thanks!! :)

shape of gearbox in pic may/may not differ slightly from actual. picture uploaded to give a rough idea only.
