practically as it is now - it has the same functionality as APM2.6 (I have both)

however the platform has a lot potential

The difference with APM and PIXHAWK, is in the Microcontroller used, while APM runs on an 8 bit atmega2560(AVR), Heart of PIXHAWK is a 32 bit ARM .

Functionality is same.

if i had potential to buy a pixhawk i would definitely buy it its better than apm 2.6 because apm may become sluggish with octocopter and gimbal where as pixhawk handles them with ease because of its 32bit mcu capabilities where as apm2.6 is only made out of 8bit mcu my vote is for pixhawk
